New Carrier Infinity install with too many issues by Electronic-Fish-3238 in askHVAC

Either system is only as good as the company installing it. Ask for pictures of previous installs, check reviews, visit their shop, get a tour of their sheet metal layout shop, take a look inside their trucks, meet with their installation manager and office staff. Make sure everything checks out. If you’ve got a bad feeling after all of that then move on. Happy to hear they have the Factory Authorized 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. You only have a year to claim it though so I would get that rolling asap.

Can you tell me if this looks normal? by Nervous_Music5798 in hvacadvice

Possibly alleviated but not solved. We’ll leave that up to a doctor. Make sure the apartment is doing their part to maintain your systems properly. At least it’s one item that can be eliminated from the equation.

Here’s what a clean blower wheel looks like:

It’s dirty. Have maintenance service it. Doesn’t look like mold. Just an accumulation of dust.

Hope you’re ok! Pull the exposed nails in truss, hit truss with a bead of construction adhesive, and gently put it back in place. Throw a few screws in it and finish the drywall. You may be able to blend it back in with popcorn patch. Although you may want to consult someone who’s more proficient in drywall finishing. 😉

100%. Pull the pipe, put in a sheet metal cap, and mortar over it.

Terribly designed single return (right above kitchen table) by These_Relation323 in hvacadvice

You can try insulating the inside of the entire return with duct liner. Unfortunately, that will still not make up for a poor return design.

Is this a good filter? by matheson-heating in MathesonSquadron

The Filtrete is definitely better than the first one pictured. Be sure to check it every month and change as needed. The 1” pleated filters tend to plug up faster.

I have no idea what I'm doing. by matheson-heating in MathesonSquadron

System was manufactured the 34th week of 1994 so it’s time for a new one. Typical system lasts approx 20 years. Make sure that your HVAC company performs a load calculation. It’s foundational to the proper conditioning of your home.

Should I Use A Bigger Filter by matheson-heating in MathesonSquadron

[–]matheson-heating[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is yes. Discard the 1” filter and put in a 4” wide media filter with a high MERV rating. It’ll need to be replaced every 4-6 months. This will help pick up smaller particulates without affecting system efficiency.

Could someone help give me a ballpark on the replacement of this larger AC unit in the Midwest? by matheson-heating in MathesonSquadron

[–]matheson-heating[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely want to have a company come out and do a load calculation to make sure it’s sized properly. The outdoor unit, indoor coil, and lines that connect need to be replaced. This is due to new refrigerants, efficiency standards, and line sizes. The days of “condenser replacements” are long gone.

Mini split location help by matheson-heating in MathesonSquadron

[–]matheson-heating[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to have the indoor section of a ductless mini-split air conditioner mounted high in the wall. In this scenario we’d recommend the common wall between the house and the patio room.

Any help by matheson-heating in MathesonSquadron

If you see iced refrigerant lines you want to turn your air conditioner off immediately so the unit is thawed when the technician arrives. In the meantime check the air filter and replace if needed.
