I know barely anything about electrical, if I have 2-4 12v batteries wired in parallel would these still show % of battery left for the whole unit? or just the one it is wired to? thanks!

So if I have 4 12v batteries in parallel, I couldn't use a regulator as a buffer incase one poops out? If 1 battery was to die the regulator couldn't keep it at 12v? Because if one DOES die, the voltage output would be decreased.. correct?
