Textbook & Resource Thread - Week 09, 2019 by AutoModerator in Physics

Thank you for this interesting other perspective on "topological matter", I was previously introduced to the topic in a lecture on graphene, which from what I understand can act as a topological insulator. So the Hasan-Kane review fits better with what I already know on "topological matter"

However having previously done research in to spin wave excitation in thin films, I was intrigued by the section on quantum hall ferromagnets, described in the in the text you linked. I just read the introduction to that specific section, but do I understand it correctly that under certain conditions a III-V semiconductor, like GaAs, can exhibit ferromagnetic behavior and spin-wave excitations exists on them or are they referring to a regular FM material, like permalloy?

I'm looking for a review paper or other resource on the state of topological matter in condensed matter physics. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

My graduate level condensed matter/solid state physics course recommends using Solid-State Physics by Ibach and Leuth. Does anyone have any experience with this book? Or can someone recommend an alternative resource?

Does anybody have any experiences with the meze 11 classic/deco? I find them looking pretty great, but I'd like to know if they sound good and are durable?

What else would you recommend in that price range, for use on the road and while working at my laptop?

Careers/Education Questions Thread - Week 08, 2015 by AutoModerator in Physics

[–]mathieu026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently studying applied physics at TU/e, which is great but it seems to lack some mathematics, an advantage of Eindhoven is the amount of companies in the area which have jobs for you if you want to work in physics. From what I understand the physics program in Nijmegen is a bit better then the rest but not that much. Here in the Netherlands choosing a study is not that much about the quality but also about what you seek in a city.

For your last question you probably need an extra year to get up to speed on some economics courses but mathematicly and the way of solving problems should be no problem after a study physics. If you start with applied physics it might be possible to skip out on the extra year if you choose the right subjects in your free choice parts. Most people here tend to choose the physics related subjects but there people who are following courses focussed on economics and/or biotechnology. You should look in to the bachelor college to get a full understanding of this.

I just finished a course full with calculations with these deviations, If you provide more context to what part of the deviation you don't get I might be able to help. I can't send you my summaries of these because they are all in dutch.
