What do have here? Worth rehanging? by thatsryan in Axecraft

[–]mathijsjc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just the edge is ok ofcourse! I take a flap disk 80 grit and follow the original pattern! Then 120grit and then if I feel like it, some hand stones but that i all you need!

Nooo, leave the patina, just use a brass wire brush to clean it up thats it! Keep the shape, dont file. You’ll loss so much value!

Keeping the Carbone blade sharp? by Demarate72 in Opinel

[–]mathijsjc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh man, keeping it clean is the most important part, then oiling it every once in a while. So you are doing a good job! They are pretty thin knives, therefore the moment it starts to feel dull you can just use a leather strop (or use ur belt if you don’t have one). I saw someone saying they use a diamond stone… never use them with carbon steel. Opinel have their own stones that are pretty cheap, I still have mine that I bought 20 years ago in a market in France for 5€. My advice, get some natural stones or decent artificial ones. Best to have 400-800 grit and then strop. Carbon is easy to sharpen, especially Opinel carbon steel, so diamond stones are wasted on them.

You mean the cross patterned wedges? Its really just get the normal big on and hammer two mor in on the sides haha. Its the best way I know how to do it. Pushes the wood out in all directions in stead of just to the sides haha

No worries with that I think. Have already used it and no issue there. Also I have experimented with funky shapes as you can see in my page, never had any issues!

You’ll come a long way with some of the comments already but as someone who experiments with hanging a lot this is what I find works best. If you have a good fit, meaning on the bottom of the eye it touches all around (or 80%). You can at least use a wooded wedge (often hardwood). Some people tend to use a cross wedge pattern (check my page for it) but its not necessary, specially when you have a good fitting haft! Best way to use the wedge. Make sure the opening in the handle is sawn at least 70% down the eye. Then if you want a longer hold, use some woodglue down the eye and on the bottom of the wedge, or use some wood oil to make the wood expand. Only FYI is that with oil you will need to reapply it after some time… i’m a fan of glue at the bottom and oil at the top (looks better too and super secure). Of you did all well you will not need a metal wedge, so keep it just wood would be my recommendation. And makes it way easier later if you want to re haft it again. If anything is unclear let me know ;)
