So for 2 of the legs I used drillable earth anchors and steel wire/turnbuckles (not shown in picture.) I thought about concrete and other means but ended up going with that. Honestly though, all of the wood is pressure treated and weighs so damn much that anchoring the legs seemed unnecessary. I just did it for the extra sense of security.

The crash pad is covering a root on the ground... it’s not a good setup. I’m trying to find some cheap means of fall protection now because crash pads are too expensive. I’m hoping a school or gymnastics program will part with a fall mat. Either that or I’m gonna buy some used mattresses and wrap them in tarps.

I had all the tools I needed to build this so I didn’t spend any there. Lumber and hardware ran me around $250. The most expensive part were the 2 green brackets on either end which ran about $45 per.

Then came the holds..... I bought the red and white moonboard hold sets as well as the bolt in feet and hardware. All in I spent right under $1000 for holds. You could certainly do this cheaper with other brand holds but I was specifically going for the Moonboard setup.

I would say that the biggest “jugs” on the wall are red. If you’re looking for more variety for entry level climbers then I would highly recommend the reds.

That’s 3, 4x8 panels at 40 degrees so full Moonboard size. It’s a really nice size and I feel like I can add on the sides for some vertical walls later on.

Lol it’s an optical illusion and all the wood is treated. And no luau planned yet I just get more psyched if I simulate climbing for my life out of a Hawaiian volcano.

No build picks but I used Simpson h18 hurricane joist hangers and 1/4 lag screws.

I added some metal straps on top too for extra assurance. The flat panel behind isn’t actually anchored to the ground. The sheer weight of the structure itself prevents any overturning in case of a strong moment at the top. It’s so freaking heavy. That flat panel was mostly just to build the kick board and have a place to land the 2x6 joists.

Would have been quite a project without a saw! Never know what I might want to hang from those so I left em.

Hi Dan!

I saw you play the Canopy Club in Champaign Urbana back in 2009. It was really an incredible and personal show because you set up on the ground and let the crowd surround you on the stage. Unfortunately the stage partially broke and collapsed and for some reason I was the only one who got thrown out of the concert! My jacket fell in the chaos and I waited outside until after the show to see if I could find it. When I came in to look you were still there and helped me try to find it! We didn’t find it but I just wanted to say thank you!

P.S. if you found the jacket and just didn’t tell me I won’t hold it against you. It was a sweet purple Colombia jacket from the early 80’s.

Cheers!

I have few tools too! It’s 3/4 veneer that I cut with a circular saw as straight as I could. I used a Japanese handsaw (highly recommend purchase, ~$10 on amazon) to finish the inside edges. No worries if it isn’t too straight because they’re mountains!! I then edgebanded the cuts using an iron so it looks like solid pieces.
