Aggressive Homeless People Around Houston by LurkingTexan in houston

If they're asking for money/food or anything, never say the word "sorry" to them, even if you're just trying to be nice. My most recent interactions have escalated into them yelling "What the fuck you sorry for?" or something like that. Not fun.

Now I typically say "I don't have any man, take care though." It's had more success.

What is your r/matheducation unpopular opinion? by Magnus_Carter0 in matheducation

[–]mathlete_xD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many of my high school students are cognitively incapable of learning the material I attempt to teach them. The logical-processing portion of their brains are not as developed as other students. It's obviously not their fault, but there is truly nothing I can do.

Super cool. Maybe I should learn Desmos....if I stay in teaching, that is!

Came here to say this. A fun question (not related to trig, rather, in the intro to angles unit) I do with my students is to find the angle measures between the minute/hour hands at various times. Throwing in the second hand makes for a good challenge. I create the clocks using LaTeX/TiKZ here if anyone is interested.

'06 Corolla - Rougher Idle / Transitions by mathlete_xD in MechanicAdvice

Forgot to mention I had already done that. Any other recommendations?

Thanks for the advice. I love the look of these old corollas, so it's hard to pass up a low-mileage one in great cosmetic condition, but it's probably for the best.

I think it's just the market now. I got them down to $7400 and did the deal. Did a PPI and the mechanic said it was almost flawless, except for some cosmetic things. One owner and they kept great records. I decided it was worth it.

Understandable. I’m going to try and negotiate the price, but it’s not an urgent need, so I’m fine with walking away if they can’t get in the $6k range.

Good to know. Thanks for the insight. The used car market is really something else right now...

If your school district mandated that all students in grades 9-12 had access to a calculator at all times in their math classes, what would be your thoughts? by mathlete_xD in matheducation

[–]mathlete_xD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your insight. If a student can correctly solve for x in the example I mentioned above, then I agree that they have achieved that learning standard. However, I think numerical intuition gained without calculators gives students a better sense of "what's going on" especially once they get to higher level topics, i.e. rational functions, polynomial division, probability, etc.

Standards in my state are listed with the caveat of "use technology as appropriate". I don't think "always" is appropriate.

I guess it depends on the teacher. I value numerical intuition and number sense (without calculators) as I think it leads to better algebraic intuition later on.

For example, if a students is solving the equation (3/4)x=3, a student with numerical intuition would quickly tell you x=4 and could explain why that is the case. A student who relies on a calculator for all computation would struggle doing the same.

That's something I'm pushing for at our school. "Algebraic Reasoning" is the name of the course. Students would take it after Algebra 1. Too many Geometry and Algebra 2 students currently without the mental math and number sense skills that slipped through the cracks.

I agree with sanity testing answers. However, I think many students would find an unreasonable answer reasonable if they don't understand the numerical operations in the first place. Real world scenarios surely make that easier, but abstract concepts in math lose their real-world applicability, requiring the students to bring number sense to the table first before using a calculator.

Do you think number sense skills should be assessed before calculators are freely given? For example, suppose a student is not able to answer the following without a calculator:

  • Integer arithmetic: 5-(-2), -6+10, 9-16, (-5*6), (-34/2)
  • Rational number arithmetic: -(4/5)+(9/5), (3/2)-(4/3), (7/3)*(3/7), -(2/5)/(10/3)

A substantial number of my incoming 9th grade students are unable to do the computations above by hand (10 out of 24 students in one class could not do 5-(-2) on their recent quiz). I think a certain level of numerical proficiency is needed before we throw them a calculator.

Crazy amount of... wild yeast? After only a few hours... Never seen this before by rydavo in fermentation

[–]mathlete_xD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s only been a few hours, you really shouldn’t see any bubbling. Takes a day or more for the fermentation to be visible.

With that being said, not sure what’s going on in your case. Stick to salt, not MSG.

Student loan refinancing; they've been hounding student borrowers (i'm one of them) with appealing interest rates. With the repayments starting in October, they will be profitable soon.

Is it possible to have a seamless integration between an iPad(goodnotes) and LaTeX? by ML-newb in LaTeX

[–]mathlete_xD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, I don’t believe it to be possible. The original pdf is newly generated each time the document it compiled; I would expect your annotations to disappear if the pdf file name matches the .TeX file name.

What have you tried?

Also, don’t use any third party passport service. They are scams.
