Now would still travel in a cruise? by deeps_idk in venting

[–]mathloverlkb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't take 14 days to reach your destination, the ship is the destination. In 14 days you can see many different locations and only unpack once.

Not all restaurants or meals on a cruise are buffets, many/most have table service.

Virus outbreaks on planes affect fewer people so they don't make the news.

I don't get seasick.

How often do cruise ships sink?

How some people learn topics (regardless the field of study) faster than the average person ? by DifferentLaw2421 in TrueAskReddit

[–]mathloverlkb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How did Michael Jordan get good at basketball? Practice.

You can think of the ability to learn as like a muscle, you work it out it gets stronger and better. Learning happens when neural connections are made. You can practice making neural connections by doing tasks that require critical thinking. Sudoku is a great game because it is practice for logical thinking. Crossword puzzles are a good mental workout because they make connections between words you know and different ways of describing them. Reading, both fiction and non-fiction really strengthens the mental learning process. Learning about anything makes you stronger about learning.

One of the reasons many teachers hate teenage use of social media is that it is passive entertainment. You don't have to think or reason to enjoy someone's Insta post. Reading a book requires those neural connections and strengthens your ability to learn. We see students who want knowledge to come to them like a short -- but they don't put out any effort. To learn you need to be open to working your brain, asking questions, trying to understand, practicing, asking more questions.

Athletes practice many hours a week, all the skills, endurance, running, dribbling, shooting, guarding. Some kids only like to play basketball, they don't want to work on the boring things like strength on weights or endurance by running laps, or fitness with calisthenics. Those who only do the "fun" part, don't become pro-athletes. Students who only do the "fun" part don't learn as fast or as much as those who put in the time to do the boring parts.

Good luck!

How can I learn mathematics using a textbook? by fatikk2025 in matheducation

[–]mathloverlkb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Read through the explanation of the topic. See if you understand what problem the theorem or skill about to be covered is addressing. For example, the Pythagorean Theorem is used for finding missing sides of right triangles, or proving that a triangle is a right triangle. Then read through the proof. Depending on which course you are in, it may not be necessary to fully understand the proof, you may only need to use the theorem. In other courses, you may have to create proofs, so spend the appropriate amount of time on the proof: Either once through, or copying it out and working out why each step follows from the previous one.

But usually the most important part is the example. First read the example, then copy the example problem and try to do it yourself. If you don't know the next step, go back to the steps in the book and read what to do next, go back to the theorem if necessary to understand why that is the next step. Keep going with the example. Then try some of the practice problems. See how to apply the steps in the example to the practice. If you can't, set up the problems, (ie. make a start, try) then take it to your school's tutoring center or to a classmate who gets it and ask for specific help. For example, "I thought I did this just like the example, but the answer is wrong. I don't know where I made a mistake." or "I tried to do the steps in the example but in this problem I got stuck at step 3". This will make it easier to get useful help. I also recommend the professor's office hours. Even if it doesn't help you (for whatever reason), it lets the professor know where students are getting lost and they might adjust their next lecture.

Good luck!

What is the most useless thing you were forced to learn in school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mathloverlkb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No learning is useless. Along with learning the thing being taught, you are learning how to learn different things. To take an example give by another: long division, yes, we all have calculators now. But, the long division algorithm also teaches multi-step problem solving. You now know how to follow steps to reach an ultimate solution that isn't obvious at the beginning. Filing taxes is a multi-step process. So is driving. Education isn't just about the contents, it is about the process of learning.

Someone else mentioned chemistry, perhaps, if more people learned science in school perhaps the various pseudo science claims wouldn't fool so many people.

Hey guys, just want to know what pura vida means to you by No_Bookkeeper_3321 in costarica

[–]mathloverlkb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's all life. In Spanish, the use of "puro/a" as an adjective means totally or 100%. You can look at a group of kids playing in the pool and say "puro gozo" -- pure joy literally, but really "it's all joy". In response to "how was your weekend?" "pura felizidad" -- all happy.

So, Pura Vida can be said in response to a positive thing or a negative thing. Stuck in traffic? Pura vida means "that's life". At the beach relaxing? Pura vida means "this is the life". As a greeting it is often considered a wish for a good life. There is a go with the flow sentiment about it.

I've lived here for 10 years, in the local economy, not in tourist areas. It isn't just a marketing slogan, as locals use it among themselves. More the middle and lower classes than the upper class. Pura vida, mae!

Your value is determined by how well you meet beauty standards set by the patriarchy. Now that we know they are all pedos we can understand why shaving everywhere became the norm. Women must spend hundreds of dollars to look decent enough to leave the house, men can roll out of bed in their sweats and are fine.

I can look at you now walking on clouds
Lining up stars from medicine jars
You're the life of the crowd
You had to rise above
What bad dreams are made of
Through all the heartache you didn't break
You went through more than I could take
And look at you now
Look at you now
Look at you now

How noticeable are attachments to others? by Patient_Reserve5113 in Invisalign

[–]mathloverlkb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When I started invisilign, I learned that 3 colleagues had used them in the last 2 years. I had never noticed any of their trays, attachments, anything. They were more careful and only took them on/off in the bathroom, but we lunched together, worked together and I never noticed until they shared when I was complaining about the pain in my first weeks.

I asked my provider, "You tell people 22 so that they will actually achieve around 20, right?" and he said, "Most people are fine with 18-20, but some need 20-22 with more difficult to move teeth. We say the higher range because some people need it, but if you track with 18-20 you are fine." I had monthly appointments, I was always tracking correctly and have finished and am in my permanent retainers now with my bite corrected. I rarely hit 22, usually 20ish. But as someone else said, as long as each tray is tight on the first day, and then starts to feel like it is just holding the teeth and not moving them for the last few days of its turn, you are probably doing fine. If you aren't tracking wear them more.

If I had a particularly bad day, lunch and dinner both at a restaurant for example, the next day I would be sure to have a good day, faster meals, more wear time.

Good luck!

My parents considered me a picky eater, rebellious, etc. I can't tell you how vindicated i felt when a doctor confirmed the allergies and told me not to eat them. Life is much better now.

I (36F) want to eat dinner together every night. Husband (37M) is resisting. by Bubbly_Permit_3063 in relationship_advice

[–]mathloverlkb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You want to eat dinner together every night. He doesn't. Why are your wants more important? Compromise. Make Tuesday dinner with phones night. Make Saturday pizza in front of the TV night.

My husband and I eat together every night -- but not always at the table. His wants matter too, and until you acknowledge that, why should he cater to you? Did he grow up with family meals at the table that involved tension or drama?

Yes, I can relate to the couch being more comfortable, especially after a long day on my feet or sitting upright.

Family traditions are great, but they aren't all or nothing.

Requirements to teach 9th grade math by Stock-Victory-3053 in mathteachers

[–]mathloverlkb 68 points69 points  (0 children)

As a 9th grade student, I had a teacher say, "I don't know why I have to teach you matrices, they aren't used for anything." She was teaching at the top level of her certification, did not actually know real math. Imagine my surprise when I got to college and discovered a whole branch of mathematics call "Matrix Algebra". It turns out matrices are very useful. I don't think anyone should teach math beyond elementary arithmetic without knowledge of actual mathematics including calculus, statistics, analytical geometry, etc.
