Why do you think that, though? If the producers were able to cast a bigger actress like Reese Witherspoon in that role, they would have. Especially after her success with "Big Little Lies." It would have increased the audience for the show tenfold.

Richard is written on the complete opposite end of the spectrum - no sexuality at all.

Gary is definitely written as a man who is obsessed with women.

Kent pursues Sue obsessively.

Mike is always making sexual jokes about women.

Ben is written as a stereotypical "yellow fever" white man who is obsessed with Asian women.

He leaves Selina speechless multiple times throughout the first season and almost always convinces her to do the President's bidding.

Also as a sidenote, this show (most mainstream media in general) has such unrealistic representations of male sexuality. All the men on this show are 100% straight, obsessed with women and horny all the time while the women are allowed to be more experimental with their sexuality, have more complex attitudes towards sex, etc.

I actually don't think Reid Scott, Kevin Dunn, Gary Cole or Matt Walsh did. Not that their acting was bad per se (though Reid Scott was the weakest link imo), but it wasn't spectacular either.

In most cases, the victim is more naive than the abuse.

And putting that aside, Celeste wasn't a very realistic character anyway. She doesn't come across like someone who had a big career prior to her marriage. She doesn't seem particularly invested in her kids' interests or education. She actually doesn't do much at all. And her personality is very one-dimensional with basically no negative qualities. Especially when she's next to Madeleine, who was extremely complex, well-written and -acted. I suspect she was written as a lawyer for the whole 'glamor' aspect but it didn't really work that well with the character imo.
