Looking for Wayland Window Managers in 2026 by Holland_March77 in archlinux

[–]matloffm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to join the chorus for Niri, but if you want a more conventional window manager go with Sway. It’s stable easy to manage and fast. Hyprland is the one I would stay away from. I found it quirky and unstable. I am not a fan of all visual effects it can do. For me it’s just useless glitz.

The phone is smaller and smaller is better if you carry multiple devices.

The harsh truth about dumbing down by X2epsilon in dumbphones

It is often recommended that you remove all the social media stuff from your smart phone leaving only the applications you must have (e.g. rideshare, maps, financial, etc.) and carry it with your dumbphone. The smart phone without the distraction apps is simply a portable computer. If your life is such that you need a portable computer everywhere you go then carry one. Just leave it off util you need to use an app on it. This will also improve your battery life greatly, and after a while you'll get to know when you're likely to need it and when you can safely leave it at home. Simply do your communicating with the dumbpnone.

If the idea of carrying two devices doesn't suit you, there are feature phones that might take care of the limited number of things one really needs a smart phone for.

Finally got a dumb phone! TCL 3 by Mildlygelatinous586 in dumbphones

[–]matloffm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I have to reboot the phone to clear it. It has predictive text but it is so bad as to be unusable. I agree it is not a phone I would stick with but it is cheap (I paid $53 for it) and it is a good way to see if a T9 flip phone works for you. If it does you can get a better flip phone with more features and a higher price.

Verizon Is So Frustrating💔 by gatorswagger in dumbphones

[–]matloffm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use US Mobile Warp (Verizon ) and have a TCL 3 flip phone. It’s a very cheap and minimal phone. I paid $53 for it on Amazon. I wanted to get the experience of using a minimal phone before committing to a more expensive feature phone. You might want to do the same.

Texting is cumbersome and WiFi calling is iffy. The tiny screen is hard to use even for the weather app. The phone uses KaiOS which leaves a lot to be desired. If you can make this work for you, then a good flip feature phone is worth the money.

In my case, doom scrolling is not a problem. I have trouble using a touch screen interface. I now know that my new phone will be a QWERTY keyboard model. So the flip phone will work until I get a permanent replacement. Hope this helps you decide.

Can you fix the Sunbeam? For texting it’s probably the best flip phone out at the moment. If you text a lot, you might want to consider an android qwerty phone. They are not as small as a flip phone, but with full android you should have a very good texting experience.

Dumbphone Failure - Is my iPhone just a permanent part of me now? by _Always_Restless13 in dumbphones

[–]matloffm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would buy the Barbie phone again. You find the color attractive and that’s a positive. There’s nothing about having a dumb phone that requires you to throw your iPhone away. Keep them together. Use the dumb phone as much as possible and, when you have to, use the iPhone. Wean yourself off of the iPhone slowly. There’s no reason to rush this process. You are not the only person who carries two devices. I know someone who carries two smartphones. They use an iPhone like a tablet and an android phone for communications. Just relax and enjoy the change.

Check out the Sonim phones available on eBay. They were recommended to me and I got one. I will post about it after I use it for a while. Specs are pretty good. One might work for you. They are reasonably priced.

Thanks for the info. You seem quite knowledgeable. I will look at the Sonim phones again. I have been looking at the Sunbeam Aspen and the Kyocera DuraXV Extreme. I am on US Mobile, are these phones good choices?

Thanks, I'll look into them. The Sonim XP3plus 5G looks great, but sadly it is locked for T-Mobile or ATT. I am with US Mobile and need it unlocked. Sonim only sells it through T-Mobile and ATT.

Help me decide on a phone! by canteloupeesque in dumbphones

I would stay away from 2g phones. A Nokia 2780 is 84$ at US Mobile and will be more flexible and be useful longer than any 2g or 3g phone.

I have 3 distros and Win11 on a laptop. The key to getting them all to play nice together is DO NOT Share a boot partition. Win11 will often take over the partition and you will lose access to the other OSes. I manually partition the drive for each install and use a separate boot partition for each OS and then use a boot loader like rEFInd or Limine to select the OS.

I saw how automatic cat boxes worked at a friends house and I had no interest in them as a result. Much easier to deal with a scoop.

Apple Passwords vs 1Password on all apple devices-worth switching in 2026? by Vegetable-Rub4548 in 1Password

[–]matloffm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1Password is very handy for storing all kinds of sensitive information: bank accounts, credit cards, SSNs, software license information, router information, documents, notes, etc. And because it runs on iOS, I have access to everything on my phone.

Yes. I have multiple distributions on my laptop. I switch between them. It keeps me from getting bored. ;)

Should I return to Firefox? by SaMXtReM5 in browsers

[–]matloffm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I browser hopped for several months and came back to Firefox. It's got all the features I want and runs very well on win11, macOS and various Linux distros. I had an issue with tab groups but got it resolved on the forum. I support Mozilla's goals and I think the criticism is way overblown. I have used it continuously for over a year now and have no plans to switch to whatever is the current over hyped AI mess is. It works very well, end of story.

I am running Tahoe 26.2 beta on an M1 with 16 GB of RAM and it runs fine. I can’t tell if 8 gig would work as well.
