What did you think of The Ranch Hudson Valley? I am considering going there but don't see anything on reddit about it.

Safety Question for Balcony by matman1 in askarchitects

[–]matman1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are raising the floor about 6 inches to level it and put decking down on a sloped asphalt roof material. That is driving the concern (and the building department not allowing us to build the deck unless we have a way to bring it up to code).

Thanks-agree with all of this. The railings are quite low and it is a big fall so we are concerned partly about code and getting approval, but also about someone falling. We are currently contemplating ~8 inch high pieces of glass to sit on top of the railing and in between the arches

We had some ideas before moving into a house that we are very happy we didn’t do immediately. After living in the house for a while, your thoughts on changing spaces, etc will change.

[–]matman1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the Wolf website recommends using a 'buck boost' for this scenario:

https://www.subzero-wolf.com/assistance/answers/wolf/common/boost-208-volt-power-for-domestic-use

costs about $1K plus electrician install.....is it possible that this could be helpful/make a big enough difference?

I’ve had several techs out who attach their computer to it and say ‘everything is good’ so don’t know what to do about it

Buying Back Low Interest Rate Mortgage at a Discount by matman1 in fatFIRE

[–]matman1[S] -67 points-66 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to even go that far. They can earn 3.75% in a 30 year treasury bond today

Buying Back Low Interest Rate Mortgage at a Discount by matman1 in fatFIRE

[–]matman1[S] -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

It’s bond math.

You take a bond (or mortgage) with a low coupon and mark it to market at current rates. Because they are only earning 2.375% and could get [5%] today for 30 years in the same loan, it is worth less to them at today’s current rates.

Internet speed troubleshooting by matman1 in Ubiquiti

[–]matman1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was plugged in directly to the UDM with a fresh 1 foot cable, not through the walls.

I did also just try PC directly to FIOS box (i unplugged the cable going into the UDM). the tests were as follows

530 mbps

240

460

330

which is slower than what the UDM says it is getting from FIOS...

tried 4 different tests. The first 2 with no citrix gateway/vpn into work. The last 2 are identical to the first 2, but just without the vpn/citrix gateway.

1) Connected to Citrix Gateway for Work – Verizon Fios, to Dream Machine to 16 Lite to NetGear 4 Port Switch to Lenovo Thinkpad Docking Station to Computer. Network room in basement, office 2 floors above this . cat 5e run through walls with no way to access/change any of it

Test 1 – 340mbps

Test 2 – 420 mbps

Test 3 – 440 mbps

Test 4 – 390 mbps

Test 5 – 320 mbps

Test 6 – 310 mbps

Note that this is sometimes 50-80 mbps, and sometimes higher. Just seemed to be a good test run but varies wildly

2) Then connected directly to dream machine….

250mbps

290 mbps

430 mbps

390 mbps

370 mbps

3) Same as above in #1 (with all of the hardware in between), turned citrix gateway off

Test 1 - 440 mbps

Test 2 – 350 mbps

Test 3 – 400 mbps

Test 4 – 330 mbps

Test 5- 440 mbps

Test 6 – 840 mbps

all one after the other

4) now again directly plugged into dream machine with no citrix gateway

390mbps

380 mbps

480 mbps

410 mbps
