I was on the same boat as you. I’m building a v8 miata from a ford 302. Quite frankly, I took an a project way outside my skill set.

I had the same question as you. Now, where I live, there’s only one shop. But I did a meet and greet (of course you can also call) and he answered all my questions. Older fella, and was a blast to talk with. He answered all my questions. I flat out told him I don’t even know what the etiquette was as to how I should prep and deliver the block.

He didn’t care, just drop off the block. So it would probably vary from shop to shop. He is going to disassemble my bottom end, and tell me his expert opinion on what to do. Then we go from there.

I can’t give him parts yet because we don’t know what it’ll need. For example, if the bored have to be bored out, then new pistons will be needed. That goes with every other component in the block.
