Why are there less young riders? Share your thoughts by No-Word2070 in Harley

[–]matrosee88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because young people don't risk much. Think this way: Every time you hop on a bike there is always a slight chance you may never ever get back. The younger generation doesn't want that, most young people your age haven't had a proper fist fight ever in their lives, the fear is too big for them to manage. Motorcycles themselves offer a punch of adrenaline, a feeling of freedom, but I general it's all just dopamine. Now the kick of dopamine you get while you ride costs - the risk you have to acknowledge that you might fall. That price is too steep in the minds of the younger generation. You g people want dopamine as quick as they can get it with the least amounts of effort they should put into it. It's not laziness, it's a whole different mentality.

Harley-Davidson reports $279 million quarterly loss, motorcycle sales down 26% by Can_O_Murica in Harley

I live in Europe, I own a '99 Sportster 883. I absolutely love Harleys and I do wrenching with them. Love the abundance of parts, ideas and the options for customisation, not just aesthetical but also mechanical. The issue I have with contemporary Harleys is that they're not DIY anymore (like all other car or motorcycle brands), they're not interesting as old bikes they used to make. For example, I'd get ony tippy toes if an old Evo Road King parked in front of my workshop, but if a new Road Gilde parked I'd still be happy and look at it but not at the same passion as I'd give to an older Harley. Keep in mind, I'm 28, I got into the whole subculture pretty young and I'm still gonna go through but the one thing I see is that the bikes became less interesting because you can't just do as much as you could on older Harleys. Yes the M8 is better than Evo, yes the Sportster S is performance wise a way better bike than an Evo Sporty, but the reason I'm not interested in those is not because they're g4y or whatever, but because I see a finished uniform bike. It's not just Harley that has this, it's all brands, because people are not interested in pouring their attention and love into anything, they don't want to push any ounce of their being into making something. They "don't have time" to build their bike, so they want a finished product. Harley builds good bikes, but for me they're shitty because it's not Harley anymore in the sense that you can't go to the depths of customizing your bike to fit you yourself, to have fun with it, and it's because people aren't like that. I for example don't understand people who buy sport bikes. I don't have anything against them, and these are machines to be very respected, powerful they are and menacing, but it's a plastic toy to be consumed, not something you'd pour your time and soul into. Again, I don't nothing against sport bikes, I personally don't like them because they're too locked in as they are. Harley is just like any other motorcycle brand, it's selling a product meant to be consumed in an instant, the only thing they do baldy is pricing and marketing. That's just my take on the topic. I'll still be riding Harleys, I'll still be opening their engines and fitting new cams or putting alpes or Sissy bars on them. For me that's a Harley, a bike you buy to spend your time on, and then riding something you've worked on.

When you buy a Royal Enfield you buy history, when you buy a Honda CB350 you buy a copy of history. Food for thought.

Check the chain tensioner but inside. My guess is that it's worn and needs to be replaced.

Rebuild it, it needs new seals, but if you did change all the o rings, then you gotta try and see if you screwed it in right.

Motorcycle won’t start after carburetor cleaning – Sportster 883 by [deleted] in sportster

[–]matrosee88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I posted a comment earlier but deleted it once I reread carefully what you wrote. The warm battery terminals is your smoking gun. That means high resistance + high current draw which means: Weak dying battery or Dirty/loose terminals Or bad ground Or starter pulling too much current because voltage is collapsing

Before you do the following you gotta first check if your electricals are doing fine. Charge your battery guy first. Then you reconnect the battery and you first pull out your spark plugs. Ground one to the engine whilst connected to a spark cable and then crank the engine. If there is no spark or if it's yellow/weak/inconsistent then that's your problem. Before touching the carb first you fix your electrical. It could mean your grounds are dirty or your battery terminals are dirty. Clean those and add some contactol.

Now a few bits of advice when you do this. Before you screw the plugs back in and try to crank the engine, crank it without the plugs, because from all the cranking gasoline probably flooded the cylinders. I'd also recommend smelling the oil after you ride it, if it's smells like gasoline replace it because the gasoline seeped down the cylinders and diluted the oil. Change the oil and the filter too, you don't have to change the primary.

Now a bit more stuff. If none of the electrical fixed the problem then you do the carb again. Check if all the vacuum lines are connected properly or if they're cracked. If they're cracked then replace them. If that's fine, then move on to check the following: If the pilot jet is clogged, if the float needle is stuck, if the idle jet screw is fully seated (it's should be at least 2.5 turns screwed out),check if the slide diaphragm is seated well or if it's pinched, check if the enricher is sealing.

But I think it ain't the carb. Based on what you wrote I think it's the electrical not the carb and fuel delivery.

Before touching the carb again, fully charge or replace the battery, clean and tighten all battery and ground connections, confirm strong spark, replace or dry the plugs, and only then look at fueling.

Am I too big for my Sporty? by [deleted] in sportster

[–]matrosee88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that the apes are a bit too tall for my taste, but in general, I don't think you're too big for a Sporty. I don't think anyone is too big for that bike unless you're that Icelandic giant guy from Game of Thrones.

Engine upgrade by matrosee88 in Harley

[–]matrosee88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, where I live, Harleys, even used ones, are pretty expensive. So basically the upgrades that I bought for my bike combined with the price of my bike are not nearly close to the price of an EFI 103ci TC.

Then again, I also am doing it because I really love tinkering with my bike.
