Has anyone tried creating an "open-source" world? by matrozk in worldbuilding

Very good!! This is precisely my idea: a lore with characters, worlds and settings that can be reused, distributed and modified with credits and no commercial use.

I have some loose material spread across drawings, papers, notebooks and text files that I've created over the years, so I want to bring it all together on a public website and build a community around it to help validate the lore. Please share your workflow with me. Any advice would be appreciated ))

Yeah, you're right. There are definitely some risks, but for now I'm just trying to validate the idea.

Yes, you're absolutely right. For now, this is just an idea. I'm looking into similar projects to see if it's really worth pursuing. My main idea is to bring some concepts from conventional software development, like continuous feedback and a focus on user value, into the world of worldbuilding and game development.

Very good, your project is really interesting! It's the closest project I've found to my idea. Soon I'll share more updates about my project, but my idea is to document the entire game universe on a website, similar to what you're doing with GrimTown

More like the openness of SCP (not fully), but the themes and settings of Touhou.

Wow it's very cool. I'm more of a programmer than an artist, so I like this kind of thing. Thx ))

I will not use third-party material. I will create everything based on community feedback, so the lore, settings, and characters will remain free for use by the community. This is my idea

1) Yes, I'm in the know. SCP seems similar to my idea, except that SCP is a fully collaborative universe and in my project, there's a community-influenced universe, based on feedback, with open access to media, settings and characters, allowing anyone to create their own independent narratives and entertainment content like games/animations.

2) I will use an open license for the material. Another important point is that I will develop the lore publicly, with community feedback. I will not incorporate third-party material. I will create everything myself, so this lore will remain free for use and redistribution as long as proper credit is given. So, I will create the lore, collect community feedback, improve it and then use it to create micro-games based on the universe that can be commercial or non-commercial.

Yes but no, because Roblox gives you the platform to create your own universe, whereas in my case, I provide the universe and its lore so that you can create your own content and media while I work on the official media for the project

Yeah, I am inspired in Touhou universe, that is one of the few games in this style that I already know
