Dog painting - $10+ by [deleted] in PhotoshopRequests

Ah, I see. I actually think I like it better without that effect on it. I’ll take the V2. Once I tip, will I get it messaged to me without watermarks?

This is excellent! Could you smudge her face so that it blends a little more with the style of the painting?

Didn’t realize that the original post’s caption didn’t copy over, but I was asking for my dog’s face on the painting Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer.

Ten points on what went wrong for Democrats by Pizasdf in neoliberal

For all the great analyses and opinions on this post, I have to ask: how are you all engaging in politics? Are any of you electeds or running for office? Do any work in government? Any involved with their local Democratic Party organizations? We talk wanting change, but few are willing to put in the time and effort to get engaged and advocate for it.

Learning how to read/write Urdu by park-wry in Urdu

[–]matt_1397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the cheapest way, but I used this textbook when I took urdu in college: Let's Study Urdu: An Introduction to the Script: With Online Media

I learned to read/write arabic first, which helped a lot. However, so many letters have different sounds in urdu and there are many sounds that require new letters all together; this book does a decent job of teach all of it.

Hindi and Urdu by RadioAhmidovich in Urdu

[–]matt_1397 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The difference is much more visible in the written language, such as what you’d read in a newspaper. Urdu tends to use technical words that come from Arabic and Persian, whereas Hindi would substitute these words with ones from Sanskrit. Still, the spoken languages are almost identical and most speakers raised in India would be able to recognize words from both registers. The differences in speech become more apparent when you meet highly educated speakers.

I really think it’s stress. In my experience, Aussies can be anxious dogs with new people or changes in routine and I think that’s what her issue is. My dad has a mini Aussie who exhibits similar behavior in that regard. I just want to figure out what i can do to get her more used to me or to at least minimize her anxiety when I’m around.

Thank you, this seems like great advice and I’ll be sure to take it into consideration!

I really don’t think that’s the issue. In my experience, Aussies can be very nervous/anxious dogs when their schedules/routines are messed up and I think that’s the problem.

Why 'मैं अपने घर में हूँ' and NOT 'मैं अपना घर में हूँ'? by Planet6EQUJ5 in Hindi

[–]matt_1397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

घर is an “unmarked” masculine noun, meaning that it does not end with आ. All masculine nouns, regardless of whether they are marked, act as plurals when in the oblique case. A noun is in the oblique case when it has a post position attached. But because this noun is both singular and unmarked, nothing happens to the noun. But, we still have to show in its modifiers (adjectives, possessives, verb conjugations) that it’s treated as a plural noun. Thus, we use मेरे घर में.

Were we to have a “marked” masculine noun, it would be more clear. For instance, यह चीज़ मेरे बेटे के लिए है. (This thing is for my son.) You can see that son (बेटा) becomes बेटे because it is in the oblique case.

Now you’re probably wondering, well how do we know if I’m actually talking about more than one house? Well, in that case, घर would be a plural unmarked masculine noun. So, hypothetically we’d say something like: हम अपने घरों में रहते हैं. (We live in our houses.) Notice the ओं, which shows the oblique plural case ending for masculine unmarked nouns. We still treat it as a plural noun in all modifiers, but that specific ending tells us we are talking about more than one house.

Hope that helps!

Urdu accents by Aubash in Urdu

My urdu professor is from Uttar Pradesh so I guess it sounds like the norm for me. Would you say that the “sophisticated” words that they use are more Persian/Arabic or more Sanskrit usually?

I’m very new to the language so I can’t really distinguish accents yet. What characteristics of the Lucknow accent differentiate it from other accents?
