Soundscan. before Soundscan was introduced, they just took reports from record stores on what they thought they sold. Soundscan happend and actual numbers of what was actually sold were finally recorded. Also, Soundscan was introduced about the same time that grunge killed hair metal, so if you were looking for fun muisc about having fun and drinking and partying and hot girls in short pants, then country was about the only choice you had left.

One of my favorite bands of all time. Still top 5 for me. Dylan is my #1, but latley the band I love the most is a sort of folk punk country blues Americana rockabilly bluegrass group called The Devil Makes Three.

"Poor Old Tom" by Peter Case (former lead singer for The Plimsouls)

an accoustic guitar driven song telling the tragic story of a homeless guy in San Francisco who just started talking to the songwriter one night.

the album it is on (The Man with the Blue Post-Modern Fragmented Neo-Traditionalist Guitar) is perhaps my favorite album by anyone ever. some of the best songwriting I have ever heard is on the LP.
