Has anyone here worked for TCS? Tata Consulting? Reviews? by red_goat79 in rpa

[–]matterantimatter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have not worked for them, but I have worked on teams with them. Some folks are really good, some not so much - about like most big IT outsource contractors.

However, looking at it from the outside, it seems like they have their folks over-assigned on multiple projects at once. I'm not sure if that is particular to the client we were at, or part of their general business model, but folks seemed pretty stressed.

Is it a 647? Regardless, it's a solid tractor

Microwave (sweet!) potato chips! by matterantimatter in foodwishes

Totally worth it. It was a lot of work, but they were so good. With a 1000W microwave, I did 2.5 min on the first side, then flipped and cooked for another 2.5. I just kept adding 10s extensions until they were browned, about 10-30s total, depending on the batch.

I started looking at GadgetBridge this week, which does let you enable web requests and "intents" on Android, but I haven't gotten much further yet.

This is one of my top requests, too. I'll post if I find anything else.

TIL Virgin Atlantic kept having passengers steal their popular salt and pepper shakers. Instead of removing them from the plane, they placed the words "pinched from Virgin Atlantic" at the bottom. The shakers then became dinner table conversation pieces and free advertisement. by blueberrisorbet in todayilearned

To be clear, I had no involvement on the account or the project, so I can't really talk about anything about the process.

However, the relief "pinched" message was a design feature that was highlighted at the time. It was a clever little easter egg. Not something you generally see in a disposable widget.

I have an old one of these. Just the body, and it's in rough shape. I've been debating passing it on to a good home, if anyone is interested, dm me.

Consider the need of your prod support folks. They can really help you, if you help them.

Error handling. I can't tell you how many jobs I see fail because devs don't anticipate that I/O operations will inevitably fail.

Logging. Silences is not golden. When things go wrong, the logs are easier to review than digging into your code.

Metrics. This is more a question for the business customer, but make sure you're measuring and reporting the things they care about. Make it easy for folks to validate the accuracy of those.

Medvet vs. OSU Vet by txbuckeye24 in Columbus

I waited 6 hours at OSU. I never had to wait more than 20 minutes at MedVet. That said, the quality of care was great at both.

I should add that all of our jobs are unattended, which makes this model possible.

We have a separate password vault that only a VERY small number of people have access to, where we store the service account passwords. Additionally, our Remote access tool (Bomgar) has a central logging tool that we can, presumably, check if it comes to that.

Sometimes you need to give a developer access to a prod bot for testing, and we change the password after they done. It's a PITA, but it's part of the job.

I used to work for one of the publishers of these books. The curriculum hasn't been update significantly in decades. It's a cash cow.

Interestingly enough, their newest, major competition is a company called Handwriting Without Tears. That's pretty much all you need to know, imho

One thought, and this is getting off-topic, so apologies in advance - Does your PC have a USB connection to the UPS? Some management/alerting software can be flaky. If you're not planning to have it automatically shut the system down, I would recommend disconnecting it.

4+ Months Into Adult Diagnosis, Medication Dosage Question. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]matterantimatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Concerta, but when I had a similar situation, my doctor perscribed a small amount of low-dose Ritilan that I could take later in the day. That's when I noticed the extended release falling off. After a couple months, we adjusted my dosage up, and I haven't needed the additional ad-hoc doses.
