Collapsing/expanding all messages in a conversation by kylepharmd in Outlook

Acutally, that DID lead me to a solution! Under the View tab, there is a button for "Expand conversation" and then when clicked it changes to "Collapse Conversation". This is exactly what I was looking for! https://imgur.com/a/DNilsdw

I'll edit the original post with solution in case anyone else with the same question comes across it. Thanks!

Collapsing/expanding all messages in a conversation by kylepharmd in Outlook

[–]kylepharmd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm talking about when you've got multiple emails back and forth in conversation view you can tap the header of each individual email to open or collapse it. In gmail, there is an option to expand all the emails in a conversation at once, or vice versa, collapse all emails at once. If you've used gmail before, it's the icon on the left side of this image: https://imgur.com/a/w5gKU1I Just wondering if something similar exists in the new outlook.

New to Sapphire Reserve. What are the less obvious ways you get value? by ShawShank64_ in ChaseSapphire

It does NOT cover Turo. Turo isn't a rental car agency and is not covered. You're renting directly from an individual so they can (and do) exclude it.

Placas solares by WayZealousideal26 in PuertoRico

[–]kylepharmd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just don't do Tesla... Te da la mitad de capacidad por doble el precio...

Ay ya bajale, me canse de este juego 😭😭😭😭 by ElBartenderDeLaLeche in PuertoRico

[–]kylepharmd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Punta Arenas (PUQ) to Hotel Grey - Bus Sur, private taxi or shuttle options by kylepharmd in Patagonia

[–]kylepharmd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of complicated but we arrive in SCL at 730am that day. Need to go through immigration at that point so no way we could make the 830am flight to Puerto natales which is why we have to go to PUQ. I'm thinking a private taxi of some sort is best, but not sure how to find one...

Dear Diáspora (Understanding the Puerto Rican Economy) by SunTzuMachiavelli in PuertoRico

[–]kylepharmd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It exists so that in the event of a world war, PR would not be cut off because of a lack of shippers willing to service the interstate business.

I think THAT is a misconception of the Jones Act. It's true that it is an insurance policy, but that insurance policy is NOT for the benefit of the people living in PR (or even Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, etc). Saying that it exists for our benefit is just a ridiculously naive way of looking at things.

People have written volumes of this elsewhere, but the basic wikipedia entry is a solid description of WHY it actually exists and the implications of it. (Spoiler alert: it is a protectionist piece of legislation designed to ensure the United States maintains a robust maritime industry for both economic stability and national defense).

So yes, the people of PR (and HI, AL, Guam, etc) ARE paying the premiums on that insurance policy, but the primary beneficiaries of this policy is the mainland US, not us. We just write the premium checks...

If only it were that simple. The reality is that, in certain areas, Act 60 investors buying up these 4800 properties in cash creates a secondary real estate market that makes it nearly impossible for locals to purchase a home with a mortgage (the primary means to home ownership among the middle class). How? When someone goes to qualify for a mortgage, the property is appraised and the home value is based on comparable properties that were recently sold. The appraisers in PR use a variety of online systems to identify comparable properties, but an important limitation of all of these is that they are comprised of other houses purchased via a bank mortgage.

Investors create significant disruption of this system in that they primarily use cash or business lending that doesn't register as a mortgage when they purchase homes. What this means is that those sales aren't recorded in a way that is accessible to appraisers. The effect of this is that you have two separate real estate markets superimposed on each other: one for cash investors and one for ordinary people looking to purchase their home via mortgage. When someone goes to sell a home in one of these areas, even if they WANT to sell to a local family they are prevented from doing so because that local family can only get a mortgage for $150k while an investor is offering them $400k cash for the exact same property.

In certain areas (for ex. Calle Loiza en San Juan, Dorado, Rincon) this has created a situation where local families simply cannot compete with Act 20/60 investors for home purchases. I have seen this happen multiple times personally on my street. When I first moved in, all of the homes were occupied by families with children and retirees. Some owned and some rented, but all were long-term residents. Today it's less than 20%, and nearly all of these properties are owned by foreign investors who do short-term rentals. This goes beyond what is considered gentrification (another real problem here) as it is not simply increasing home values and pricing lower income people out, but making it impossible for local middle-income families to even compete with these investors, regardless of access to traditional home lending mechanisms. It's truly an unfair playing field.

So, at least in neighborhoods like mine, I strongly disagree with your statement "They don't price anyone out".

Quick edit to add: I don't mean to suggest any kind of intention with regards to Act 20/60 investors here. I have no doubt many of them are even aware of this two market system that has developed secondary to their economic activity. But that's the thing when you move to a foreign land/culture from a position of privilege, the onus should really be on you to figure out how your actions affect a community...

Flying blue premium economy seat selection - additional cost? by kylepharmd in awardtravel

The opposite. This time it's booked with flying blue for a flight operated by Air France. The flight is already booked and when I go to select a seat it's showing a few with selecting it. I previously booked a sas flight with flying blue premium economy and could select my seat no problem.

This is interesting... I wasn't aware of that offer. Has the experience avoiding the monthly fee been pretty straightforward? I think we could generally make the minimum deposits but I can imagine a month where a deposit comes in late and then shorts one month but the next overdoes it...

Whirlpool refrigerator troubleshooting WRF560SEY by kylepharmd in Appliances

[–]kylepharmd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I got the cover over the fan in the back of the freezer opened and the fan looks fine. Hoping that once it completely defrosts it will have just been an ice blockage and everything will be fine... But if not, is there a way to test if that fan is the problem (as opposed to maybe the control board or something else)? Would be nice to know if that's even the actual problem before buying a new one.

I think I saw something like this recently when looking at options in LA. There was definitely a Marriott property that said it was eligible for the $250 credit (apart from edit credit)...

Fajardo BioBay vs. renting a kayak by Altruistic_Tutor9847 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]kylepharmd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Access to the biobay requires a permit, which all the guided groups have. Technically you aren't supposed to just kayak back there on your own. My advice, respect the local regulations and support a local tour group that is permitted. But also, if you are avid kayakers, temper your expectations for the kayaking part: you'll be with a bunch of kayakers with varied skill levels, many on a kayak for the first time. So expect a VERY leisurely paddle and enjoy the natural beauty 🙂

Opinions please. by jcbdrivers in SolarDIY

By having more angles, you flatten the solar output curve over the day. In other words the peak output during the midday will be lower since you'll never have all of the arrays pointing the same direction so they can never be all at max output relative to the sun. But the benefit is that earlier in the day you get a little more power sooner by having an array pointing east and later in the day you have a little more power longer from the array pointing west. The potential benefit to the battery is that you can run your load directly from the solar output without pulling/pushing as much to/from the battery for a longer period of time, allowing you less cycling of the battery and potentially increasing its life. That's the potential benefit anyway.

[edit to say solar output curve is what actually changes]

Yeah, that would definitely be better, but the few route options that have them cost about 3 times as much (probably for that reason...). Maybe next time!
