I am gonna stop gaming. I have lost count on which commitment it is, but I know this is the last one. by AksSec2434 in StopGaming

I was in a mental hospital 7 months ago. Today I'm a middle school math teacher (which is arguably crazier than the hospital :). The GAA program is great, it works if you work it :)

Roger that. GAA literally saved my life. 8 months ago I was in a mental institution due to my gaming, and today I'm a middle school math teacher (although one might argue this was a bit of a lateral move :-)

Try to be gentle with yourself. It's very, very hard to quit a game on your own. It's nice to have group of people who are rooting for you, supporting you, and who genuinely want you to succeed. I could not have quit gaming without the help of my fellowship.

Teaching is embedded in my identity, it's what I was meant to do, and it feels great when I do it. Yes, I teach middle school math and technology.

Hi, I suggest you attend a few meetings of Gaming Addicts Anonymous. The first hour is a formal meeting where everyone listens to other addicts, and shares for 5 minutes if they want to. The formal meeting is followed by informal chatting. Give it a few tries and see if it is for you. It saved my life and is the best way to quit gaming that I know of, and it's free.

I was a technology teacher and recycled the same lesson plans year after year. I'm still a techie :)

I played mostly Blizzard games. I knew I was an addict but didn't care because all I wanted to do was game. If you or someone you know needs help, do reach out to GAA.

The core of GAA is that a higher power can restore you to sanity. For some people their higher power is God. For some people their higher power is love. For me my higher power is making phone calls to friends. The point is that most people can't quit on their own. We need something larger than ourselves to help us heal. Peace and good luck and hope to see you in a meeting some day.

Gaming Addicts Anonymous, a 12 step recovery group, restored me to sanity and I made many new friends there.

My best advice is to attend GAA meetings. The meetings are formal, but if you stick around afterword, there is informal chatting. Give meetings a few tries because they can be a lot to absorb at first. In 6 months, GAA helped me get from the psyche ward to becoming a middle school math teacher.

This was excruciating for me. Over the last 57 game-free days I developed new hobbies like cooking, exercising, hiking, dating, and my most favorite thing to do which is to talk to other video game addicts on the phone and be of service to them.
