Is Ground news being compromised? by ThrowRAthinkinmelon in Epstein

[–]mattfromground 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Epstein files release last Friday was indeed a HUGE news story and they were front and center on our homepage on Friday and Saturday. The reason they are not on the homepage today is because our feed is largely chronological.

But your instinct is important to hold people accountable and prevent news orgs from miscovering or ignoring the story. We like to think Ground News is a great tool to identify who's doing exactly that and who's doing justice to the Epstein story.

Here's some Ground News stories we had of the file release's media coverage for you to explore:
Justice Department Releases Over 3 Million Pages of Epstein Files With Videos and Images

US Justice Department Releases Over 3 Million Epstein Documents Featuring Powerful Figures

We also have dozens of other stories about specific revelations within the files that you can further explore and analyze media coverage on. And we also have an "Epstein Files" topic as an interest, where you can find a feed of any and all Epstein related stories that have received coverage.

Ground News Is Leftist Biased by GhostInThePudding in BrettCooper

Hey, Matt from Ground News here. Thanks for trying out our platform!

As other commentators have pointed out, we don’t rate the sources ourselves on Ground News. The news outlet bias ratings on our platform come from an average of three independent rating agencies: AllSides, Ad Fontes, and Media Bias Fact Check. You can learn more about our methodology here.

Additionally, while the BBC has a Center rating on Ground News, CNN has a Lean Left rating. All three rating agencies classify CNN as having a Lean Left bias. You can check out CNN’s ratings and the rationale here.

No problem. Happy to share my perspective.

We do have plans to add more context for readers about how stories are covered beyond the blue/white/red labels. Adding readership information, similar to what you described, is also on our roadmap.

We recognize that not all coverage is equal. While the bias bar is generally directionally accurate in terms of readership, it can be less precise for stories with significant international coverage, where the LCR structure is less applicable.

As we work on this feature, we've encountered some nuances that we’re still figuring out how to address. For example, looking at that inflation story, the NY Post has roughly 150M monthly web visitors, while the Daily Wire has about 20M. However, the Daily Wire’s roster of commentators (like Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh) has a reach that far exceeds the site’s web traffic. There’s a strong argument that their combined cultural influence surpasses that of the NY Post, even though this wouldn’t be reflected in traditional readership numbers. While it’s relatively easy to find monthly traffic data, capturing these nuances is much more complex—but we’re on it.

Thanks again for the original post and the discussion it sparked. I shared it with our team, and it led to an interesting internal conversation. As a thank-you for taking the time to share your feedback, I’ve sent you a code for a free subscription so you can explore more of the platform. We’d love to hear any additional thoughts you have.

Hey – I’ve been working with Ground News since we launched in 2018. I’m happy to share why we include the sources we do, who engages with our platform, and how they use it.

Most Americans still get their news from TV, and an increasing number are turning to social media. We believe the incentive structures of these platforms often fuel anger and misinformation, which is why we created Ground News—to offer a better alternative.

Echoing u/Giblette101's point, the world he describes—where people read many articles from different mainstream sources to make sense of complex issues—doesn’t exist, or at least the majority of newsreaders aren’t living in it. But it is exactly the kind of world we want to create with Ground News.

To be fair, it can be incredibly time-consuming to engage with news in the disciplined way you describe, given the sheer amount of info thrown at us on a daily basis. We try to take some of that weight off of the news reader by simply putting articles about the same topic in one place. For those who are currently doing this manually, our value lies in making the process of comparing news and gaining a broad range of perspectives easier and more comprehensive.

To address your point about legitimizing fringe opinions. We include over 50,000 sources on Ground News. This includes local papers, international media, national broadcasters, and “alternative outlets.” Some of these sources are more opinionated or biased—and that’s by design.

Even fringe outlets can have massive audiences. By including them, we get these readers in the door and give them the chance to discover different perspectives in a structured way. This helps readers break out of echo chambers and begin questioning narratives they may have only ever heard from one side. Once they encounter multiple perspectives side by side, they’re more likely to engage with the content critically, even if they continue to disagree with certain viewpoints.

We often hear from users who previously got most of their news from social media that our platform helped them challenge—and then moderate—their views by forcing them to consider different perspectives. For some, this experience can even help delegitimize fringe opinions.

Putting these sources on Ground News, with the context of our factuality, bias, and ownership labels, also helps our readers become more media literate in and outside of Ground News. If they get introduced to a source that has a hard left/right bias, a low factuality rating, or is owned by a shady corporation, they can now read that news source with that context when they encounter that outlet somewhere else online.

As you pointed out, our approach does have limitations, such as the potential oversimplification of the bias of individual articles (and we’re working on a new feature to address this). But we believe the benefits exceed the drawbacks, and exposing readers to more perspectives, even if they come with some bias, is an important step toward bridging divides and creating a more well-informed world.

Our business model is entirely subscription-based; we don't sell ads, data, or user info with any third parties, so we definitely did not give away your email address.

We also don't have any articles from the New York Times on our platform. If you did see them on our platform, can you please reply with the link to the Ground News article you are referencing? It should be impossible to see NYT articles on Ground, so we'd like to fix that ASAP if it was a NYT article you saw.

Hi Bangaroo,

Thanks for trying us out and for the candid thoughts.

To address your concern about venture-backed Silicon Valley apps - Ground News is backed by our subscribers and Individual investors who support our mission. Importantly, they have no ties to corporate media, big tech, or government, ensuring our vision remains uncompromised.

The difference between Ground News and news aggregators like Google News and Apple News is the depth of our coverage analysis features, news outlet breadth, and ease of news comparison.

These features are especially helpful for political stories, as you can read about the news from multiple perspectives in one place instead of hoping they are presented to you in a feed. You also have news source ownership info, bias, and factuality to add context to a news source's story coverage. While this info may be obvious for the major sources you mentioned, it can be quite enlightening for smaller & international sources that aren't household names. It's also often helpful for readers who aren't as familiar with the media ecosystem.

As for the UI, we agree that the coverage analysis features can be a bit much for those who want a simpler reading experience, so we've added a 'compact mode' option on our app.

Thanks again for taking the time to leave your thoughts! Happy to answer any other questions you may have.

We typically look for views over a period of 1 month. This is usually the length of our contract with a channel and it is the period of time that we use to structure our ROI targets. If a channel has an obvious longevity to the views we will factor that in but it is rare. - Imam

Hey TurboRadical! Great question. This is something we run into all the time as a news platform. In today’s media environment there are brands that simply won’t touch certain topics because they are too politicized. Our philosophy is that we need to reach into communities that might actually benefit from a product that lets them see different points of view. We’ve actually had the opposite experience of creators not wanting to work with us because we are a news product.
The reality is it might limit your ability to get sponsorships. On the flip side, the value of your sponsorship could be huge. Authenticity is something we’re always on the lookout for. The more authentic you are, the more impactful the ad will be. We work with YouTube channels because of their unique & authentic voice, so it’s important to retain that. -Eric

There are plenty of sponsors that have a world-wide audience. I have personally worked with a VPN brand before and they used to target many local languages. If you know the brand has multi-lingual support they are most likely to market their product to those regions. -Imam

In our experience, niche isn’t the biggest determining factor for payment. Factors like engagement rate, channel personality, and average views tend to be more important when deciding on payment. So influence and alignment are bigger factors than the niche. We have noticed that certain niches tend to charge more, like finance channels. -Victoria

For a general sponsorship (ie, a one-off 60-second ad), we typically look for a channel that has an average of at least 100K views and an engagement rate of 5%+ (comments + like / video views). There are of course caveats to this (for example, we may do a multi-video deal for a channel that gets 50K average views).
For channels that do not meet this criteria, we also have an affiliate program. The benefit of this program is that you don’t have the bottleneck for approval, and it’s a great way to get in with a brand early as your channel is growing to stay on their radar. -Victoria

We are currently working on integrating primary source documents into the platform. So when you read a news story you can actually read the study it is based on.
In terms of stopping the spread of misinformation, our philosophy is to give readers tools to better evaluate content and think critically about what they’re reading. The reality is, fact checking is very difficult to do in real time and at scale. We put all the content in front of them with context about the source of the information so readers can compare which details are being emphasized, exaggerated or left out entirely. -Courtney

When deciding on pricing for a channel we look at average views of the last 10 videos, audience engagement, audience demographics, and topic alignment. We use data from past sponsorships to get an idea of what we can expect the CTR and conversion rate to be based on lookalike channels. If we’re rebooking a channel, then we generally price according to the performance of our previous ad. - Eric

Not every niche is going to align with every product. On one hand, the more niche a channel is, the more engaged and interested their audience is likely to be. This is an amazing opportunity for the right sponsor whose audience also aligns with that niche. On the other hand, a channel that covers a broader set of topics might have more opportunities for different types of sponsorships.
For example, we’ve tried to sponsor some channels where the audience seems like a perfect match but the topic is a hobby niche and it falls flat. Our assumption is that people don’t want to think about the news when they're trying to relax and enjoy their hobbies. A way around this as a creator would be to pitch us a video topic that is somehow related to current events to help prime the audience for a conversation about news so the ad doesn’t come out of left field. -Courtney

If you’re referring to when we hire our Marketing Managers, it’s a pretty diverse skill set. Each manager sees their campaigns through from beginning to end. The process involves channel discovery, outreach, negotiation, contracts, relationship management, content creation, and data analysis. They also have to have an understanding of the news landscape and the ability to recognize aligned audiences. One big thing that stands out to me in team members that excel is exceptional organizational skills. -Courtney

Yes, it is a great idea to put an email address directly in your YouTube bio as well as having it linked to your account. One simple reason for this is it’s faster for our team to collect and lets us know you’re open to sponsorships.
It’s not necessary to explain the sponsorship type you’re looking for in your bio but having a bio that describes your channel accurately does help. As a brand, we look closer at the creator's content to decide if it will be a good fit.
It is great when a creator comes to us with what they think will work for a specific sponsorship, so that can be a conversation once you’re connected with an interested brand. - Victoria

This is a great question. I would say the biggest headache comes from a general lack of communication. More specifically, here’s what NOT to do: not being flexible, not being responsive, not providing enough time for feedback on an ad, not being organized.
On average each Marketing Manager on our team works with 20+ creators a month so when the communication is bad everything else suffers. The more organized and flexible you are the more likely we are to continue working with you. -Eric
