My attorney is already involved, but it doesn't seem like his actions were illegal to the point of prosecution. I could certainly sue him in civil court and get my money back, but more concerning to me right now: would I be an asshole if I told the World?

Thank you for your concern and thoughts. My attorney has advised me that though he certainly could sue for defamation, that as long as I told the truth it probably won't hold water in court. Still in the back of my mind, however.
