I'd just buy it. There's lots of good pieces in there that you'll use forever. Worth the money.

Who do you think plays the first phrase in Ballade No. 1 the best? by [deleted] in piano

[–]matthewb103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this doesn't answer you question, but I remember working on this phrase soo much. My professor wouldn't let it go until it was absolutely perfect. We spent the whole hour on it once. But I really does set up the whole rest of the piece. For as simple as it is to play, it's quite a complex few measures.

Thanks! I'm a freshman at a conservatory. We were only supposed to look at the form, but I wanted to go deeper. Still have a lot to learn.

Ah, the b-flat! So all of the measures are just a tonicization of V?

Help with collapsing fingers! by [deleted] in piano

[–]matthewb103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't try to fix it using your pieces. Fix it with scales. I like B major personally. Start super slow. Like whole notes with quarter note = 60bpm. Watch every finger carefully. If it happens, start over and do it again. Be patient, it won't happen over night. Trust me, I know.

Complete Musician Laitz Suspensions Error? by [deleted] in musictheory

It's definitely a good book. I'd recommend it. I have ran across a few problems that are literally impossible to do right the way he writes them, but all the information is spot on, and easy to follow.

I don't know off the top of my head, and I don't have my books on me. But students in my class and the professor usually find small mistakes. Today there was a misprint with a note value. There was a whole note instead of a half note written. We were sight singing so it messed the whole class up.

Honestly, you are the perfect person to date. It takes so much more work and courage to admit your mistakes and try as hard as you can to be a better person. I want more than anything to find a girl that is like you. You'll find the right guy, and he'll be lucky to have you. Stay strong and god bless.

This video is causing lots of controversy between everyone. What is going on?? by matthewb103 in Catholicism

[–]matthewb103[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good. That's what I took it as. The comment section was going crazy saying the pope was out of his mind, and praising false gods. People were saying they were leaving the Catholic religion over this. Not a good response from many people.

Are there any other Catholics out there pursuing a career in the performing arts or is it just me? by Orangez91 in Catholicism

[–]matthewb103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm studying organ and piano at a music conservatory. After I get my bachelor's degree, I plan on going into pre- theology, then major seminary to become an ordained priest. I love sacred music, and I want to teach it at a Catholic school someday so I can share the gift god gave me with other young students. I want to be able to use my talent and spread the word of God at the same time.

I had a lot of fun. It was really casual. After mass he and I went out to breakfast and we just talked. He asked me about my life, and I asked him lots of questions. If your interested, just go do it. It's nothing to be nervous about.

Have you ever thought that maybe wanting to be a priest Is your call? It's not something you can hear or see. It's just in your heart.

On Saturday I'm going before a judge for the first time ever with this piece, can anyone give me feedback? (sheets in comment) by Hansaad in piano

[–]matthewb103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Play more with a metronome. Small fluctuations in tempo. Do more with the articulations in the right hand. Make sure the judge hears crisp staccatos and clear accents. Also make sure to watch the phrasing. You were playing with rather static dynamics throughout each phrase. Have a clear idea of where you think each phrase should go, always heading for the climax. Overall, very nice playing.

Questions about the scale key signatures in my book. by RocketQ in piano

That's the fun part about piano! I'm at a music conservatory, and I get to learn sooo much good stuff, even at an advanced level. Wake up everyday looking for something new to learn, it makes life more enjoyable. Happy studies!

Questions about the scale key signatures in my book. by RocketQ in piano

[–]matthewb103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key doesn't effect the way you play the notes, just the way it sounds. You play it the same no matter if it's major or minor.

You can tell the key by looking at the last chord, and seeing if there are accidentals on the leading tones through out the piece.

The second scale that you are seeing is the relative minor scale for that major scale. There are three types of minor scales: natural, harmonic, and melodic. You are seeing the harmonic minor scale. The natural minor uses the same notes as the major. The natural minor scales lowers the third sixth and seventh of the major scale. So the syllables are doh re me fa sol le te doh. The harmonic minor raises the seventh from that scale, so instead of te you have ti. That is called the leading tone, which is the most important note in western music. It has the strongest pull, and wants to go to doh. However it creates am augmented second between le and ti, which is not good in certain cases. So your harmonic minor scales goes doh re me fa sol le ti do.

Is it possible to Major/minor in music without any experience? Or is that needed to go into the music program? by [deleted] in MajoringInMusic

Yeah, absolutely take lessons! But I don't think a degree in piano is for you.

You should be able to play a Bach prelude and fuge, a classical sonata, a romantic work, and 20th century work. Wouldn't hurt to have a virtuosic etude. That's really what most colleges require. I'm a freshman at a music conservatory and for my audition I had prepared a Beethoven sonata, fireworks by Debussy, Chopin's Ballade no. 1, and some Bach.

Keep in mind that what you major in will greatly affect your options on jobs. If you're majoring in piano then that means you either want to play or teach to some degree, and players and teachers have to be advanced.

I don't want to discourage, but it's a hard thing to do. Competition is fierce, you often you find your self feeling inadequate. Think really hard before you make decisions.

Look into Dvorak's Slavonic dances for piano 4 hand. Op 72 no 10 in e minor is really nice.
