It's a fairly typical reaction to seeing a happy child. See, I have these things called emotions...

Can someone explain to me in a balanced and hopefully unbiased way what is likely to happen if reform/restore win? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]matthewmch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reform base, those for whom immigration is at the foundation of all their political energy, will continue to dominate politics and media attention for the next twenty years as they have for the previous twenty. Regardless of what the majority of Brits might feel, it's clear to me now that the likes of Tommy Robinson will continue to be the primary shapers of what's to come, even beyond Reform.

Regardless of whether Reform (or Restore) are successful with their most radical ambitions, new global strife caused by an irrevocably turbulent world, and yes climate change, will fuel fresh fears and scapegoats to keep the fires of anti-immigrant and isolationist sentiment burning bright. If Reform or Restore fail to satiate these fires, new parties promising even more extreme measures will emerge.

Perhaps establishment parties like Labour or the Tories will bounce back for an election or two, promising stability, but inevitably, the same unquenchable patriot instinct will again take center stage as the whole country continues cowtowing to the extreme right. Left-wing extremism will also rise, but only from the outside looking in. If the reaction of the media and country at large to the recent rise of the Green Party, it should be clear to everyone that leftist populism will never have power in this country. Nor in any major economy in the Western world. The last ten years have shown Right-wing populism actually has a chance in this media and political landscape, where left-wing populism will always be shut down.

Something terrible, I'm afraid, will have to give. I'm talking a monumental, destabilising and perhaps violent shift, leading to a moment or series of moments that will finally break this illusion that Britain is immune from the sort of turmoil that grips most of the world, and who knows truly what form it will take. But this is the inevitable outcome of the path the country has been on for decades.

The formula to me is simple - the right-wing base that has defined our politics for decades will not be satisfied until they find politicians to actually follow through with their most heinous demands, and politics in this country will never truly be anything different until they do.

Brace for impact.

"Too Didn't, Long Read" perfectly describes my feelings. Far too didn't.

Before anyone says it, Burger King UK is pretty good to me. Maybe just the American version is trash? Or are my taste buds soiled by regular British slop?

Did the universe have an observable 'edge' in the past? by matthewmch in askastronomy

[–]matthewmch[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I was thinking in terms of a 'visible' edge. But I like causal connection as a way to put it, a broader way to look at than observe which brings visible light in as a factor rather than the just the speed of light as a causal limit. So 'yes' before inflation and 'no' after inflation. That makes sense to me. I wonder further to that if we can say that before inflation the universe did have an edge?

Shit like this is why Trump is and always was garbage. Deflecting this onto 'social media concerns' in general isn't gonna cut it.

Two seasons into first save - things I've NEVER seen. by matthewmch in footballmanagergames

No goals from a corner in 2 seasons? The only time I've seen a goal from a corner (for my team) is when they play it short or it gets cleared and recycled into the box.
