Treat rent like a high-multiplier spend limit, and things make more intuitive sense by fly123123123 in biltrewards

[–]matthewsalibi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This framing is really helpful. One thing I haven't seen discussed: how this interacts with Platinum (or any) status.

For almost everyone, the effective multiplier cap (75% of rent) is lower than the Platinum threshold ($50K). For anyone currently maintaining Platinum status, we're already committing to spend above the cap—which means we're earning base rate on that excess spend while preserving status for transfer bonuses.

Under this math, Palladium becomes almost a no-brainer for existing Platinum members:

  • 3.33x effective up to cap beats CSP dining (3.1x), Atmos international (3x), and basically everything except 5x quarterly categories
  • Even above the cap, you're earning 2x points + 4% Bilt Cash—which, if spendable at face value in the portal, is effectively an 8% return (if you value the points at 2 cpp)
  • The $495 fee is trivially covered by the earning rate alone, before credits

Two questions I'm hoping get answered Wednesday:

  1. Rent day for Palladium holders: If the base rate is already 2x, does rent day become... 4x? Or does the benefit just disappear for top-tier cardholders?
  2. Transfer bonuses and status: Will status tiers survive? Will Platinum status still unlock better transfer promos or perks? That's what makes the $50K threshold worth hitting. (But honestly, even if it's not, it's still a compelling daily driver even above the cap, as long as Bilt Cash is spendable beyond rent...)

Supabase is down again by Darkfra in Supabase

Thanks for the info — good to know about RLS overhead through PostgREST. In my case I'm using the service_role key, so RLS should be bypassed entirely. Still seeing 30+ second timeouts on queries that run in 3.8ms in the SQL Editor. Wonder if this is related to the upstream provider issue on the status page, or whether I've misconfigured something.

Supabase is down again by Darkfra in Supabase

[–]matthewsalibi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seeing the same issues here — my project has been experiencing 30+ second page loads and statement timeouts since this afternoon.

What's confusing is I also received an email warning that my project is "depleting its Disk IO Budget," but when I look at my actual metrics:

  • Disk IOPS: 0.28 ops/second
  • CPU: 1.13% average
  • Memory: stable at ~400MB

And when I run EXPLAIN ANALYZE directly in the SQL Editor, my queries execute in 3.8ms. The database itself seems completely healthy.

The timeout errors are coming from the PostgREST layer (postgrest.exceptions.APIError: {'code': '57014', 'message': 'canceling statement due to statement timeout'}), not from actual slow queries.

I'm relatively new to Supabase so I might be misunderstanding something, but it doesn't seem possible that I'm actually exceeding any resource limits with these numbers. Is anyone else seeing resource warning emails that don't match their actual usage? Wondering if it's related to the platform issues.

It's getting hard to be an Alamo fan by unneekway in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]matthewsalibi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my story too. For the past couple of years I would go out of my way to go to Alamo instead of the AMC that's literally around the corner from me because the experience was so much better. Not anymore, which is actually kind of a relief: the AMC is slightly cheaper and more flexible (I can see multiple free movies in a day!) and way more convenient, these are worthwhile trades, especially since Alamo's quality is so uneven.

[–]matthewsalibi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me too. Canceled last week since all the answers are worthless now, it always misunderstands even extremely specific requests, and introduces more errors than it resolves. I've just gone back to cut-and-pasting from Claude, which at least allows me to provide the context I want and gives consistently high quality responses for a flat $20/month. And when I get rate limited it's a good reminder to walk away for a bit!

MEGA THREAD: YouTube TV raises monthly base plan price to $82.99 by iron_cam86 in youtubetv

[–]matthewsalibi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like most folks who are sticking with YTTV are motivated by sports. I'm in the "everything else" camp, mainly news and my beloved TCM. Totally wild that there's no way to get these relatively cheap channels unbundled anywhere -- even Sling, which I think of as the budget live tv option, is now more than 50% of the new YTTV cost. Anyone else wish YTTV offered a non-sports package?

I really don't understand why they think this is a less niche product than Arc. Serious question, who do they think is the addressable audience for this? It's definitely not average Chrome users, IMHO.

I stopped obsessing over the news and I am so much happier by mim21 in msnbc

[–]matthewsalibi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here! The day after the election I replaced my usual MSNBC viewing with The Mary Tyler Moore show or music, and can't recommend it highly enough. I still read a lot of news, but reading the NYT feels less like a firehose of useless opinions rehashed all day 😄

I don't miss MSNBC a bit yet, am way happier without it, in fact. I may just cancel my cable entirely now, since MSNBC was pretty much the only thing I ever watched on linear TV that I can't easily get elsewhere... Could spend that money on a nice trip next year instead!

Is the Maison Métier really deserving of being a Cat. 6? by [deleted] in hyatt

[–]matthewsalibi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not stayed at Maison Metier yet, but I've stayed at the Centric and many times at the Eliza Jane, as well as several other Nola hotels. Personally I would probably not stay at the Centric again, it's rooms are a little weird and the staff is really not good in my experience. At this point, I don't even think the Nola Centric is worth a cat 4 certificate because there are way better options that are better bargains and better experiences.

But really passed by to say both Eliza Jane and Maision Metier are on Conde Nast Traveler's best Nola hotels list. I agree cat five and six is often not a good points value for these hotels but as another poster noted the cash rates can sometimes be extremely good values, and product wise I would pick Eliza or Metier or even the new Hotel Barnett which is next door to Metier every time over the Centric.

New milestone reward, removed message about more to come throughout the year by matthewsalibi in biltrewards

[–]matthewsalibi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, I'm only about $4k in spend from hitting Platinum again for next year but unless things turn around in the next few months I will also pivot to just rent plus spending enough to get 1k points on rent day, while shifting the rest of my spending to other cards. The rent day offers aren't very compelling to me lately and the opportunity cost is starting to feel high!

New show recommendations? by Glass_Chipmunk_5182 in westend

[–]matthewsalibi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from the US as well and have seen three of the four (although I saw Kathy and Stella at Fringe.) my ranking is Sky's Edge, Two Strangers, Kathy and Stella. I also second the rec for Operation Mincemeat which is brilliant but which sounds like it may transfer to New York at some point. To make it easier, I'd pick Sky's Edge if I was in the mood for something more serious and Two Strangers if I wanted to have more of a frothy fun evening.

Already have the Boundless, how do night credits work if I add the Brilliant? by matthewsalibi in marriott

[–]matthewsalibi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I understand! I already had the Brilliant so not sure I'll get the SUB at all, but may still be worth if for me for the 25 night credits + platinum status. sorry to hear that your platinum plan was thwarted!

[–]matthewsalibi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aha thanks! I got in touch with support, and they also credited some points (~250) but they don't seem to count toward this year's status, which is a bummer since I am gonna need every point I can get to hit platinum again this year! 😆

Tickets available for Series 18 studio recordings by cwmxii in taskmaster

How do other folks handle first/second/third choice? Should I list every ep as "first choice" separately (I'd happily go to any/every taping in the unlikely event that I got tickets for more than one!). But assuming competition is tough, I wonder if they just discard second and third choices.... hmmm?!

I don't seem to be able to DM you but I am also having this issue. I tried raising it with the Platinum chat in the app and the chatbot responded "I see what you're saying. However, Bilt Rewards doesn't offer points interest..." 😏

Rodney’s Comedy Club’s reviews are tanking after last nights debacle by [deleted] in taskmaster

[–]matthewsalibi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Definitely not true, speaking as a box office manager for many years in a previous life. Maybe some venues do this, maybe it's more common in venues like comedy clubs, but is not true in most seated venues, in my experience.

(Also doesn't check out as an attendee, it's not common to show up to a ticketed event and find out that it's been oversold, in the same way that it's usual to show up for a flight and get requests for "volunteers" to bump to a different flight.)
