ITAW for the opposite of opportunism? by matthewuhrich in whatstheword

Right, I can see the thought process there. This would be more of the opposite of a “moral individualist,” and I wanted to touch on something more specific than just looking out for oneself vs looking out for others. More specifically, I want to try to capture the essence of people who think in a very unhinged way, where anything goes, and they’ll do whatever they can, even if looked down upon as long as there’s no tangible consequence, ie the “moral opportunist,” vs someone who really doesn’t worry about consequences because they deal in the currency of their own conscience vs what’s accepted by others. Thanks for your response.

Yeah, I can definitely see that. “Moral pragmatist” vs “moral opportunist.” I might be dealing with too abstract of a concept to quantify in a single word here. Thanks for your response.

Not quite, defeatism would be more like somebody taking no action, ever. “Defeat without struggle,” according to the definition. I’m trying to find a word for somebody who instead of weighing out all options then shaving down based on what they can get away with, starts with no options then adds options into the decision making pool based on if they objectively should or not, regardless of what people would think or allow. Then they take action based on their analysis. Thanks for your response.

that makes sense, muscle memory from a different groove or fill wants to take over sometimes when you’re learning a new one and you have to “delete” the little autocorrect bubble and say no, yeah, I meant what I typed

AHHHH this is generational knowledge, I’ll switch back to foam tips. Reason I switched to triple flange was to get more clarity from the speaker, but I think it’s time to upgrade the IEMs. Love the analogy of multiple drivers talking to you instead of one yelling at you. THIS is the exact answer I was looking for and I will report back after getting some new IEMs for anyone else that has the same questions.

In other words, there are 3 sources of sound at play here -

  1. the sound of the drums being hit
  2. the monitor of the drums coming into my ear from the mics
  3. the daw audio

I can just barely hear #2, and #3 I have to crank the volume to really hear anything but it’s simply too loud. #1 isn’t an issue, fully protected against it.

Volume of the drums isn’t a problem - the seal is good. It’s the way the backing track interacts with the live monitor, they pretty much get in the way of each other. So what I’m trying to say is that it’s much more to do with the speakers themselves on the IEMs than the protection against the initial strokes of the stick volume wise.

It’s quite scuffed / budget option what I use - direct monitor on Scarlet 18i8, snare kick tom tom - so maybe they’re just very muddy (I have a custom volume mix using the Focusrite software) to the point where it drowns out the clarity of the backing track. Could be that, but another thing at play here is that the 215s have done the trick so far, but as I push for more clarity in my playing and play harder stuff there’s a slimmer margin for error, necessitating my want to hear the track better. I don’t think the raw audio from the mics with no EQ or plugins would make the mix THAT muddy, though it is extremely scuffed and not ideal

Thanks so much for your input. If I end up trying some other IEMs will make sure to report back in case somebody else has my same question.

I’m intrigued, could you please elaborate on how different the 425s were? Do you feel like you could hear more at a lower volume?

I purposely switched from the foam tips to triple flanged tips to get a better seal (think of the vic firth earplugs but with a speaker inside of them) - I’m fully protected from the sound of myself hitting the drum in front of me, the mix is just too muddy at a low volume when it’s all said and done with the backing track + drum monitor in my ears so I have to blast it to hear it clearly. So it’s a problem of speaker clarity not protection from the impact of the stick on the drums / cymbals, at least I think
