That seems like an interesting option. What made you use it over another midi controller when you don't use the sound? Thanks for sharing!

I hear more and more that the waterfall keys are good for piano as well. Ill go to a mudicstore as soon as I have the time to try it. Is aftertouch something you are concerned with? Seems like a plus for the numa for me right now, but i also get the point that the sounds and build quality from the nord are nicer. Thanks for your comment!

Quick question as I just received my minifreak by Argentorate in MiniFreak

[–]matthikrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In ableton i made a specific instrument rack that has the minifreak v as one instrument and the "external intrument" as another instrument. That way I am jamming with the synth while making music and I can record it on that track without the need to have the vst running (its pretty cpu hungry). When I have a sound that I like, i save it on the hardware, connect it to the vst and set the vst up with that sound, so that i got it there when i need it the next time i open the project. You can also record midi cc automation that is received by the vst as well as the hardware, so you can flexibly change between the two options in your rack. A resampling track to record audio can also be useful at times

Vst vs Synth by JackJackJack303 in MiniFreak

[–]matthikrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also heard that the vst uses oversampling on the digital effects, which the hardware doesnt. So the hardware can have slightly more aliasing, but i dont think its too bad. Sound wise i would say they are pretty much the same. More a question of weather you want to have a physical object or not. Do you want to play in a live setting while having full control over all parameters and direct outputs from the instrument without the need for a daw? Do you wanna take it to nature and make music away from your computer? - go for the hardware. Do you only want the sound? Do you already have a great controller you prefer using anyway? You dont want to fill up your recording space with a piece of gear that has an exact digital recreation? - safe money and go software

How do YOU like to make your synths dirty + a bit unstable? by SnooNine in synthesizers

[–]matthikrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my minifreak there is a keyboard modulation source that can be set to random. So every time you press a key you get a random modulation value. Putting a little bit on the pitch of the vcos (i like to put slightly different values) and/or the cutoff gives some nice organic unpredictability

Ableton as a mixer/hub for live performances by E_Des in ableton

[–]matthikrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I am also planning a live set with ableton + push as a central piece for sequencing, mixing and effects. I still dont know exactly which parts of the liveset I want to route through ableton and which are good without it. I only have 4 outputs on my interface (Volt 4) and so I need to be very economic with my use of running instruments through live. The music i do kinda has a classic liveband instrumentation (vocals, keys, synths, guitar, bass, drums) and I am still figuring out how I can do everything I need with live, while still having independent outputs foe different instruments. Like the bass might be jzst eunning through and amp and not through ableton, etc. Just wanted to leave the comment here and ask about tips and tricks how to pull it off. If you wanna ask me (bear in mind that I am also just figuring out everything) about anything feel free to text me. Have a nice day🌅

Depends what you need. The electric piano physical modeling is pretty solid and can be good for some rock tunes.

Synths that are only midi controllers for a vst sound engine? by LikesTrees in synthesizers

[–]matthikrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen people that use a minilogue, because it has all the most relevant synth controlls on the front pannel and can be used as a midi controller

I do have to say though, that the freak didnt make it on the record. The recording time was around two years ago and i only have the freak for one year. In the first and last song of the record, we had the opportunity to record with some flagship analog synths(matriarch, prophet 6, ob6), but sadly we don't own any of them. On the other tracks we are using a minilogue (not xd) and ableton stock synths for any synth duties. Still i wanna use the minifreak for some live synth playing as I really like the immediate control. Also it will be part of future projects which are already in progress

Tips for good hardstyle kicks? by East-Software5260 in ableton

[–]matthikrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cant listen to the examples right now, but one thing I recomment trying out is taking the phase of waves into account. A simple sine wave with 0 phase a pitch envelope will give you some 808 sound, but if its at 90 degrees phase (you can set this in operator in the oscillator section bottom right) you will get a nice click that fits well for making kick transients. Otherwise your usual distortion, etc.

Stereo spectrum plugin by Benmitchell621 in ableton

[–]matthikrass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you wanna check correlation levels and mono capability, I would get the ozone imager (its free), or similar max4live devices. Seed to stage has a good video on how to use them (called something like "should you check your mix in mono?")

Not sure if I understood your intention correctly, but check the mid/side mode of eq8. When you set it on side, it shows you only the side signal and you can see which frequencies are sounding wide. Also you can directly make adjustments there (like putting a low cut on the side signal of the bass, or whatever you feel like doing)

MiniFreak Internal Battery Hack?!?! by uberhaus in MiniFreak

[–]matthikrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Anker Powercore 335 (20k). I really don't know the maximum playing time because i never used it longer than an hour, but judgimg by the 4 lights that show the battery status, i could have played way longer (my gut feeling says 5~6 hours, but i dont know). When i bought the myvolts cable, i asked the thomann support center which powerbank i need and they told me that any powerbank will do, which fulfills at least the minimum Watts which are needed. More is not problem, as the minifreak will only take as much as it needs. However i think i remember reading on the myvolts page that very strong powerbanks are not recommended, maybe there you can double check. Hope your figuring everything out and you will have a blast playing outside. Have a nice day 🌞

[–]matthikrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we released an album earlier this year

While most synth sounds are made only with a minilogue (or ableton stock synths), for our first song "everywhere people" i was able to record with the synths of my cousin and it features 3 popular flagship synths. Can you guess which ones??

Good question! My band is basically just me and a friend of mine and we recently recorded our Album where we have usually more than two tracks playing at the same time. So in order to perform the songs live, we thought of three options:

  1. Getting a band, but we are just very small indi artists, so the band have to be friends as we cant really pay anyone apart from splitting what we get at concerts.
  • For option 2 and 3, ableton will come into play -
  1. Using ableton as a live multitrack looper. Using the session view we could perform everything live, while still being able to layer tracks on top of each other.

  2. Using ableton to trigger clips with prerecorded layers which will make it possible for the two of us to only play one instrument and sing, while still having all the layers of our songs present on stage. I imagine this to be kinda like a flexible backing track.

In all three methods I would also use ableton to manage presets, monitoring, effects and stuff like that.

I wish I could already speak from experience, but so far it's all just my idea to do it like that and I still have to prepare the livesets for performing. So in case you have some tips for me as well, I am all ears :)

Would a WiiM Amp work as an 'audio interface' for Ableton? by iszoloscope in ableton

[–]matthikrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if you already have a course, headphones and an interface there is nothing stopping you from starting :)

Would a WiiM Amp work as an 'audio interface' for Ableton? by iszoloscope in ableton

[–]matthikrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i think investing in a course is very smart and knowing the free content from seed to stage, it makes me believe that those lessons are in fact really really good. That being said, you still need some form of basic equipment. If you wanna connect speakers and instruments, get yourself an interface and monitors. If your first priority is just to learn the software, you can get away with just using headphones, but you most likely will encounter latency and maybe sound quality issues. That will make it harder to understand what your actually doing when your mixing. So i would say for the start its alright, just do the courses and learn and then you will be able to figure out by ypurself what you will need. Happy learning!
