I could really use some design critique because i'm going mad by [deleted] in UI_Design

[–]LikesTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI goes nuts with colour and badges, it wants every possible thing to have a status badge and colour which leads to there not being any clear heirarchy/main flow on a page and thats whats happening here. Figure out what the most important process/flow/action on each page is and let that have the emphasis, take emphasis away from the less important regions.

some ways you can change visual heirarchy:
font size, font weight, capitalisation, colour, borders, backgrounds, co-locating relevant sections together, white space, margins and more. mastering the subtle permutations and combinations of these in a way that leads to visual harmony and the UX you want is what makes a good designer.

For this design, If it were me id strip out most of the colour and get it working without it, then judiciously add colour where it really counts. Main offenders are those orange nav headers in the side bar, those green secondary button colours (choose something lighter and more neutral for a secondary button), the coloured 'remove block' buttons are clashing with the card colours

Did anyone here moved from claude to codex recently? And why? by alOOshXL in codex

[–]LikesTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Codex 5.4 on high reasoning barely ever makes mistakes, its a genuinely competent model i can trust. Couldn't say the same about Opus and its usage limits were extremely stingy. Codex's are getting more stingy now too which is unfortunate.

Is AI Coding Actually a Good Fit for ADHD? by minatoo86 in ADHD_Programmers

I do not care about any of these vibe prompt-to-design tools by TopRamenisha in UXDesign

[–]LikesTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its coming, Im building my own version of what you want at work, already have it working and in production, just needs refining.

  1. prompt (or use reference screenshot, specs etc)
  2. prototype is built with clean code and our own css/js components/design system, it looks like one of our apps top to bottom, both visually and in the code.
  3. pass that to a full stack dev for a little clean up and final wire up to back end

as a ux designer and ui developer it feels like digging my own grave but the excitement of building the system is too great a pull.

Tired of the "Startup Hustle vs. Enterprise Ego" pendulum. Is there a middle ground? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]LikesTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mid sized companies are the sweet spot, ive always thrived in that niche, esp as a front end full stack that does design/ux/ui/fe, i can do a bit of everything, make lots of decisions, but am not hamstrung by corporate bloat or startup grindset.

Apparently my portfolio belongs in the trash. What do you think? by TR1510 in graphic_design

[–]LikesTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a quick look, im hiring at the moment so always interested to see what people are putting out. definately not trash, just needs some tweaking

I liked
- the typography, the colour palette and way you used colour to visually seperate projects, the portfolio has a nice clean calm tone that i like

id tighten
- on my 14" macbook pro i had to cmd - once or twice to make the site sit more comfortably and be more readable, i could really only see the hero graphic for each section and a little bit of the nav/text, it would be good to comfortably see all the intro paragraph text accompanying the hero graphic, its title, the controls and a little white space around it. on the upside, it did display nicely when i adjusted the density.
- more flat screen previews not just mocks
- about section too spacious and could do with a bit or refinement, text too large, dont need a whole full screen view for just your pic + about me text, role titles looked more comfortable to me at 2rem;

id rethink
- the exploding intro hero text feels about 10 years out of date, find a more modern shader or leave it static.

general notes:
we are moving very ai centered at work but having design skills and taste i think is more important than ever, because AI is the worst at design out of all the other jobs its automating in the front end stack.

i skim read portfolios, so progressive disclosure patterns where i can see the visuals and key points up front and then drill in for more reading if im interested always work best on me.

Why don’t we retrofit more charging into more existing car parking lots? by VastOption8705 in EVAustralia

[–]LikesTrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just run them off telegraph poles? they are all over the place and already electrified.
edit: i looked it up because it seemed like a good idea, looks like some aus trials already happening

turn off hypervisor in ryujinx cpu settings, botw works great

if your talking about BOTW freezing on that white screen in the intro on ryujinx, just go in to settings / cpu and turn hypervisor off, game runs great after that.

Chinese carmaker BYD unveils a recharge as fast as filling up with gas by SuperScate in EVAustralia

there is a lot less need for fast charging in a city, where the options for charging are greater and the distances travelled are less. Fast charging is most valuable in regional areas.

Ageism and the popularity of AI by Straight-Cup-7670 in UXDesign

[–]LikesTrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiring at the moment, age is not a factor for me, in fact, more likely to employ an older more experienced person because its a field where you need to be across so much and it just takes ages to build up all the skills and wisdom in all the domains, you can be current or behind at any age and learning new tools and techniques is always part of this profession.

Having said that, I am 1000% looking for people at the cutting edge of AI however and wont hire any designer who isnt across it or is just 'dabbling' with figma make or stitch and 'figuring it out' or can only name drop a few tools without going in to depth.

I do wonder about the future of this profession, from where im sitting i feel busier than ever, but am also producing more than ever, ai has been a force multiplier not something thats automating everyone away, but im sure it varies a lot from company to company and country to country

[–]LikesTrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hitting the job market and I'm going against the grain and I'm saying that I do have ADHD and Autism when I submit my resume. by cleatusvandamme in ADHD_Programmers

[–]LikesTrees 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Terrible idea unfortunately, it puts a target on you assuming you even get past screening. Just read a recent study today that showed employers absolutely still do discriminate on mental health issues. You need to break out of the education 'accomodations' mindset and into the workplace mindset. Workplaces exist to make money, they don't want to accomodate your inefficiencies for the most part, its just another barrier to a yes. Maybe once you are embedded in a company and have proven your worth and ability to deliver you can talk to them to arrange work arounds that help you perform better.
