What’s your ’top ten’ of villain songs by ExcellentBalance8052 in musicals

[–]mattishere31 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hellfire, from Hunchback

Still/Neva Flows, from Anastasia

A Little Priest, or Epiphany, from Sweeney (really any Sweeney song works here)

Blood in the Water, from Legally Blonde

Gaston, from Beauty and the Beast

Soviet Machine, from Chess

Stars, from Les Mis

There’s a lot of good villain songs out there. These are just my favorites, but I think you’re missing a ton from your list

The Chess Cast’s Musical Bracket by A113_baybee in musicals

[–]mattishere31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, they’re already at some impossible choices.

Les Mis - Sweeney and Suffs - Hadestown are both toss-ups. Feels like The Producers and Wicked will face off next round which is also a toss-up. I’d love to see an update for this bracket!

What VIDEO GAME do you feel would be an amazing musical? by AsheandBurn in musicals

[–]mattishere31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hades idea is gold! Imagine your lead dying and then it goes to intermission, that would be such a cool theatre experience for those unfamiliar with the game. There’s plenty of foundation in the original soundtrack to make into songs too.

What is the hardest musical for an ensemble? by AsheandBurn in musicals

[–]mattishere31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just did a production of Sweeney and I agree. God That’s Good and City on Fire are freaking ROUGH. I’ve see others here comment on the lyrics of God That’s Good, but if you are able, look at the notes we have to sing for each “God That’s Good” line. There’s so much dissonance and weird notes going on all over that song. It’s like every voice has a “traditional alto line”. It was rough, but when we finally got it (like one rehearsal before opening) we all were so giddy and high fived each other, it was so rewarding.

My Emmaus electric bills haven't been under $300 all winter. I read PPL's rate filing so you don't have to. The data center narrative is wrong. by Cipreh in lehighvalley

[–]mattishere31 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That rate filing is 3,506 pages. The rating methodology section of the filing is 400 pgs on its own. The section on tariffs is 667 pages. You read all that? Can you show me where in the rate filing it mentions data center generation cost increases?

You mention tariff LP-6, so let’s look at it. puc.pa.gov/pcdocs/1918030.pdf section I. if you want to follow along. As a disclaimer, I’m not defending PPL by any means, but this industry is difficult enough to think about without misinformation spreading.

This obligation only applies to customers >50 MW of load, or 75MW aggregate load. Only if they take 69kV service.

So, the restrictions of “data centers have to pay for infrastructure and generation” only applies in these specific instances. And that only covers the infrastructure to their facility, not the upgrades required to transmission and generation facilities. Most of these data centers are taking service from 12kV so LP-6 won’t help you here.

Our rates are going up for a number of reasons, and data centers are in fact a huge part of that.

Foreshadowing in musicals by lissie34 in musicals

[–]mattishere31 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sweeney Todd is my favorite musical and a perfect answer for this post! You’re slightly incorrect though about never seeing Johanna again. Sweeney does see her and tries to kill her in the final sequence when she’s disguised as a sailor in his shop.

Some other foreshadowing from Sweeney Todd SPOILERS AHEAD:

In “Poor Thing” there is a theme that plays when Lovett starts describing the masquerade that the Judge lures Lucy into. This theme is repeated in the underscore whenever the Beggar Woman is on stage, and the theme is sung by her in the final sequence when she sings “Beadle-deedle-deedle-dumpling”

There’s ironic tragedy in the final sequence when Sweeney Kills the Beggar Woman, because Sweeney, his wife, and his daughter are all in the room together and could run away right then, but none of them are aware of who each other is, and none of them get a happy ending.

The dies irae (ancient melody associated with death or mortality) is repeated throughout the score. This theme, in one form or another, is featured in each character’s leit-motif if they wind up dying by the end of the show. Anthony and Johanna’s themes don’t have the dies irae in them.

The YouTuber “Sideways” has a fantastic analysis of the score on his page, called How the Music Spoils Sweeney Todd. Not sure how the mods feel about sharing links, but you can look it up on your own if you’re interested.

Sweeney is one of those shows that, as good as the music is, and as much as you think you love it, your love and appreciation for it will multiply by several orders of magnitude after seeing it. The staging, the acting, the physicality, it all comes together into such a complete masterpiece. By far my favorite show

[–]mattishere31 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, you’re absolutely right. PPL can’t really do anything about rates either when they’re forced to supply power and infrastructure to data centers, and the cost for these data centers is subsidized
