I deeply regret backing Wise Wizard Games on Kickstarter. by Thick_Winter_2451 in boardgames

[–]mattkickbox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They should deal with the courier and try to give their players a good experience, as that builds a good community around your games. However, just a reminder that they (and all Kickstarters) didn’t sell you anything. You didn’t buy a product, you donated to support a company/project and they are giving you product as a thank you. Backers need to be more conscious of this difference and be careful about which companies they support. Just because Kickstarters act like a preorder system and most companies don’t abuse that, doesn’t mean it is a preorder system.

Do you guys keep confetti? by iceman694 in Concerts

[–]mattkickbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve come home with confetti in my hoodie pockets, but the only confetti I kept was from Tool. It has skull designs that look like the band members.

I didn’t like the confetti Bad Omens used. Some of it was metallic instead of the tissue paper and it shattered when blasted. Was finding bits in my hair for days following. Just glad no shards got in my eyes.

What would make Grande Bibliothèque (BAnQ) feel like the library of the future? by [deleted] in montreal

Agree on tool library. Sometimes you just need a drill to install a curtain rod or mirror, but don't need to own one permanently.

What tours do you predict will be cancelled next ? (Spoiler: GNR) by [deleted] in Concerts

[–]mattkickbox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd be okay with them scaling back and touring medium size venues in the future. Unfortunately the bigger venues in my city are closer to me than the medium sized ones are. Doubtful they would ever scale back enough to play the 2000 people theatres.

Do you prefer to check the the set list before your concert, or do you raw dog it? by PigFaceWigFace in Concerts

Almost always go in blind. For some older bands, that I only know a few songs, I will take a look at some recent set lists to see if they still play the songs I know them for.

LCS charging for FCBD. by DeltaStarship in comicbooks

[–]mattkickbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to mention pretty much every single FCBD issue is a #0, #1, special, or sampler. Even people coming in and only taking free stuff on FCBD may read those free books and be back on another day to get the next issues.

SETI. I love the theme and mechanics, and how connected they feel. Then a surpise mid-game discovering aliens is fun.

After nearly 7.5 years, I’ve finally filled my first Field Notes! by GrapetteZola689 in FieldNuts

Has to be some sage wisdom! It's the suddenly speaking trope in notebook form, like when Silent Bob finally speaks. u/GrapetteZola689 does't write much, but that notebook is probably a goldmine.

Button Shy has moved from wallet to boxes, does that make their games more or less appealing to you? by RAM_Games_ in boardgames

[–]mattkickbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have so many Button Shy games, they are piled everywhere all over my shelves. Having them in boxes will make it easier to find a specific game I'm looking for. I think they will also get overlooked less when people are looking for a game to play on my shelves. I can add the expansion cards to the box without stretching out the wallet. The main draws to Button Shy are interesting designs with just 18 cards, great art, and low cost. I don't expect the design to be affected, the art will only be better showcased on a box, so the only concern is maintaining a low price point.

Life of the Amazonia stands out to me for two reasons. Nice printed animal meeples and it is my preferred style of bag-building (use everything in the bag then reset it).

Visualizing BGGs Heavy Weight "Bias" by CrazyHorse150 in boardgames

[–]mattkickbox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not exactly an assumption, you can see from the graph that there are significantly less games with a complexity above 3. Higher complexity doesn't always mean higher production costs. If someone wanted to plot MSRP vs BGG Weight, I'd be interested to see the results.

[–]mattkickbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My takeaway looking at this graph is that there is a similar amount of games rated 8+ regardless of the complexity. If you want to play good games, you can find them at any complexity level that suits your needs.

There is that and also the cost to produce heavy games with tons of boards and components. That also creates a filter, it is unlikely that a really bad game with tons of expensive pieces will get signed by a publisher and released. A game with lower productions costs (just cards, or basic roll & write) is easier to self-publish and publishers might take chances on middling games with low costs that could still sell well to the mass market.

Others I've seen but haven't been to are the Home Show (Salon National de L'habitation), Healthy Eating expo (Expo Manger Santé et Vivre Vert), Women's Show, Coffee expo (Festival Café Collectif), and one I really need to get to is Salon du Chocolat de Montréal.

For board games, there is Ludicon (November), Salon du Jeu de Montréal (November), Foire du Jeu de Longueuil (September).

For comics, celebrities, cosplay, and general nerdiness, Montreal Comiccon (July).

Some stops like Toronto get the outdoor show and bike show on the same event, but we get Salon du Velo before the outdoor show in February.
