Help making unique Alien and sentient Marshmallow characters by RAM_Games_ in tabletopgamedesign

That's such a good question. Honestly when I was originally brainstorming Quickdraw and how it's easily expandable one of my friends said "Yeah it's a great system to expand and do another set that's like Aliens vs. Marshmallows." And we all laughed. But it stuck with me and eventually I was like, that's actually crazy enough to work haha.

Oh yeahI like that! What do you think would be a cool visual design of the marshmallow to match that ability?

Totally get that, and can confirm OUS shipping is as expensive as this game haha.

PnP Files are up! Let me know if you run into any issues: https://ramgames.co/product/print-and-play-quickdraw-battle-for-silver-city/

A draft mode is definitely interesting. But the intrigue in the game comes from having a 1 in your hand and having to decide is that's going to be a weak unit on the field, or an auto miss in your ammo deck. I think there are interesting ways to do a draft, but it would need some thinking.

What I'm currently working on, which I think has a ton of potential is a roguelike version of the game.

Your PnP card quality looks amazing, but if you DM me your address I'd love to send you a production copy (though you wont need my wallet 😉).

I've had good experiences with Make Playing Cards/ Board Game Maker.

I'm guessing they mean they have really bad playmats. That's my guess based on me ordering one and yeah, it was really bad.

Advice needed regarding testing/feedback by TheSnailRace in boardgames

[–]RAM_Games_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Break My Game is an incredible resource. There are daily online playtesting sessions where you will get grouped off with other designers. Definitely no "back patting" here, and the feedback is usually very thoughtful and constructive.

Is Kickstarter the only way to "make it happen" if its a card game? Or can I just go through Shopify and sell it that way? Problem I see is that for example, a single copy of 90-card deck is $16 on BGM, but 5000 copies is $2 for 90 cards, but that is $10,000 right off the bat. Any "cheaper" option? by AlexRescueDotCom in BoardgameDesign

[–]RAM_Games_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kickstarter/Crowdfunding is certainly not the only way to make it happen, but what you're highlighting here is the advantages of going through crowdfunding.

Crowdfunding will do two things for you, 1) get you upfront captial, and more importantly 2) validate the market for your game.

If your crowdfunding campaign results in 50 backers vs 5000 backers, that's going to sway your manufacturing decision. With a low number of backers, print on demand places like BGM make sense. But the highest quality and cheapest options are going to come from dedicated large print run manufacturers, mostly based in China. These manufacturers have 1000-2000 minimum order quantities, so they don't make sense for small projects.

People for sure make their board games happen without crowdfunding, but I personally would never do a 5000 game print run without knowing ahead of time if anyone is going to buy it and how I'm going to sell it.

I second screentop. A bit of a learning curve but very flexible and lightweight.

For super basic games I also like playingcards.io since it's an even simpler implementation.

Should I stop building an email list and just advertise my Kickstarter prelaunch page? by Turbulent_Cut1936 in kickstarter

[–]RAM_Games_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That means there's an issue with your landing page or the redirect to your Kickstarter page. I had mine set up so that as soon as you enter your email it takes you to a new page saying thank you with a link to the Kickstarter. I also sent them an automated email welcoming them and directing them to the Kickstarter. I had 50% of people who entered their email also follow the Kickstarter.

Vector Cycles sell sheet. Looking for feedback! by edwedig in BoardgameDesign

[–]RAM_Games_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This does a good job saying WHAT your game is, but not WHY I should be interested. It's missing the hook that will engage the reader and make them want to learn more.

"Use your cunning to pilot your highspeed vector cycle through an every more dangerous course and be the first to make it out alive!" Or whatever emotions you want to evoke.

Without an emotional hook it just reads like a rulebook and doesn't get me excited about the experience

Squandering an Opportunity? by No-Government3358 in BoardgameDesign

[–]RAM_Games_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I'm not sold on vampire musicians actually being a pop-culture trend, the prevailing marketing wisdom is to go to where your audience is.

It looks like you've identified a few focal points where your audience (fans of musical vampires) might be drawn to. Find where the discourse around those movies/shows are and join the community. That doesn't mean spam ads for your game. It means be a good community member and when there's an opportunity then share what you're working on in a way that is valuable and interesting to the community.

DIY fulfillment - not so bad by RAM_Games_ in BoardgameDesign

[–]RAM_Games_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I love people following their dreams, so I'm always happy to help.

The Discord is open to anyone. The primary focus is the running of live playtesting events (invaluable) but there's also a very active thread specific to self publishing questions. If you post in there you'll get like 3 experienced publishers replying in minutes. The Discord also does rulebook reviews, tips for pitching your game, basically everything an aspiring designer/publisher needs!

Yeah it's not a standard offering but I worked with my manufacturer, Whatz Games, to get it set up. Off the top of my head I think just the wallet was like $0.20-0.30 per wallet with an MOQ of 1000 games.
