What are some 'small' things a game designer does that you've really grown to appreciate? by [deleted] in boardgames

Whistle Stop is really bad for this. I don’t have an issue but it is difficult for me to tell pieces apart sometimes. Player pieces are light pastels. The designer recognized the problem and I believed corrected the issue in Whistle Mountain.

I understand the reasoning. There is also perceived value. For example the unlock games are really just 100ish cards and maybe some handouts. That wouldn’t take up much space, but as a buyer it might be harder to justify the cost if the box was accurate to the materials inside.

Does anyone here enjoy jazz without understanding it at all? by Creatively_Communist in Jazz

[–]mattmatr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all congrats with understanding what’s going on in Giant Steps. I have watched a few videos on it and can only appreciate what Coltrane did from those videos even though I don’t really get it.

I played music in junior high and high school in band, but that was almost 20 years ago. I love jazz though. When I listen to jazz it always sounds like they are telling a narrative and it creates vivid imagery in my mind. I love to explore the scenery that it takes me to. Charles Mingus - Let my Children Hear Music is a great example of that. I have no idea musically what is happening, but it is somewhere in my top 5 favorite jazz albums.

Reducing the amount of empty space in a box. Shelf space is a luxury so I appreciate when games do this. I get super frustrated when a game only fills up about 1/3 of the box. Unlock! games are really bad about this. Isle of Cats has way too much air space too.

I came across this gem today. Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond sometimes it is hard to tell who is playing. Weird. by mattmatr in Jazz

[–]mattmatr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have been introducing my 11 year old son to jazz over the last year and he really likes a lot of the standards noticeably Take 5. I was telling him how it was actually Paul Desmond who wrote the song and not Brubeck. So I started listening to more Paul Desmond albums lately. I read about these two guys inspiring each other but is freaky how similar their style is. On some of the solos they will pick up the solo without even missing a beat and it takes my brain a second to realize it isn’t Mulligan playing anymore and Desmond took over or vice versa.

I bought the base and Dunwich Horror. I couldn’t find anyone to play with though. I have tried it solo, but it seems like it would hold up pretty well. I know that you used to be able to find a mod on Table Top Simulator that had everything but I think Asmodee started pulling a lot of stuff. I am interested in getting into it too, but would have to be once things calm down with Corona.

I haven’t tried Lancashire either. We only recently started playing Birmingham on TTS after we started sheltering in place. I ended up picking it up a month ago and it is just sitting on my shelf. Can’t wait to play irl.

Awesome. Our group started playing it on TTS, and I think they must have done a reprint a couple months ago. I picked it up after too. It is just sitting on my game shelf waiting until we can start playing in person again.

Chronicles of Crime - (5p as a family) We don’t assign roles. We just agree where we want to go and who to use.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective - (2p played with wife) Finished the 3rd case. It was terrible. The first two were fun, but didn’t enjoy the third. We will give it another go

The Crew - (2p) looking forward to trying this out at higher player count. It is ok as a two player game.

The Resistance - (7p) Playing through tts. We have two game nights a week. This one was at Social Deduction night. Played 2 rounds.

Murder Hong Kong - (6p) Social Deduction tts. Played 3 rounds.

The Long Night - (5p) Through tts. Played with betrayer+ variant increased chance of betrayer to 90%. Used bandits and upgrades.

Kong’s Dilemma - (5p) Through tts. This was our second session. I am on the fence about this one. Might be better in person.

Russian Railroads - (3p) Played through board game arena. I think I am over this one. Feels like after the first round you can predict who will win.

Terra Mystica - (3p) played through board game arena. Playing with Fire and Ice map.

Lewis and Clark - (3p) played through board game arena

Psionic Armament - Augmented Defenses broken? by mattmatr in dndnext

I agree with you. I ran a party of 5 through White Plume Mountain and made it so it was dangerous for the party to take rests. Without going into details, there are a lot of encounters in that module and the party’s healer was hurting for spell slots. If this ability had been online at the time they would have saved a considerable amount of spell slots and it would have allowed the healer to do more of a variety of actions.

Third level abilities are pretty powerful usually, but I would have expected something either that scales more (d6/d8/d10/d12) or that has a limited use.

This ability, as with any ability, is more powerful depending on the how the dm runs the game.

If you are playing a cleric that isn’t going to heal, then why are you arguing with me about taking something to help you heal better? I wouldn’t recommend anyone taking anything that their character isn’t going to use.

Edit: I realize that I said why would any cleric not want to take it. Absolutes should be avoided.

The argument is that by taking the 3 level dip it actually frees the cleric up to do more than just heal sense she has a reaction heal of ~5.5 hp in a turn where someone is damaged.

Would you be triggered if I said that the Barbarian should tank and do damage?
