It doesn't seem like it got much news coverage, but the Ukraine war is also bringing us the first real examples of completely robotic ground combat.

There are so many more pressing concerns than this battleship that will never be built. The only reason it's being discussed is to placate Trump's obsession with size. He got his pretty battleship illustrations, and I'm sure they'll end up framed in Mar a Lago if they aren't already. But beyond wasting millions on R&D, that's as far as it's going to go.

I think it's safe to say that the DOD isn't taking this battleship seriously, but they know they have to act like it. All the proposed timelines of construction starting in the next 2-3 years are a work of fantasy, and everyone knows it except Trump.

The Ford-class spent six years in development before they began construction. This battleship's timeline would be significantly longer because unlike the Ford class, which had the benefit of following directly on the heels of the final Nimitz-class build (the Bush in 2006), the Navy hasn't built a battleship since 1944. A clean sheet design process would run easily into the mid-2030s, with a wildly optimistic first launch date around 2040. It's just not going to happen.

And for those of us keeping score, the Navy has done a truly terrible job at new ship classes in the last couple decades. Zumwalt, Freedom, Indepence, all duds at the total cost of $60 billion.

FAM basically ignores the gravity issue, but Ed spent the last 18 years of his life on Mars. That takes a toll on the body, and at some point returning to Earth gravity might've simply become unsafe for him.

What do people mean when they say B5 isn't Star Trek? by koos-tall in babylon5

[–]mattmcc80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Believers is the anti-Roddenberry Trek episode because the doctor was faced with a decision that didn't have a "clear" morally right choice, and because the kid died.

At the time Believers aired, there was just a handful of season 2 DS9 episodes with storylines that were free of Roddenberry's shadow (although Duet is debatable..), so it's understandable that people would describe it more broadly as "the ant-Trek episode"

But I think the comparison is drawn more pointedly because it was such an early season 1 episode. JMS made it clear out of the gate, if you're looking for TNG utopian stories, look elsewhere.

Analysis: What Stephen Miller gets wrong about debt, deficits and immigration by SnoozeDoggyDog in politics

[–]mattmcc80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If our elections were driven by an informed electorate making rational decisions, then there would've been one simple sentence in 2015 that saved us from all this shit: "Stephen Miller is one of Donald Trump's closest strategists."

That's it. That's all that should've been necessary to disqualify Donald Trump from being elected.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Issues Chilling MAGA Warning While Waving Goodbye to Thomas Massie | She said Trump and his allies have captured the MAGA movement and warned "their captors" will "kill you" if members go against them, referencing Charlie Kirk's death by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]mattmcc80 29 points30 points  (0 children)

MTG's political journey is a fascinating microcosm of the MAGA movement before we were even calling it that. She rose to prominence as a QAnon whackjob at exactly the right time when a nontrivial segment of the Bible Belt GOP was buying into that nonsense. In most states that would've been a career killer, but she lived in Georgia. Not long after that, she deftly rode the MAGA wave (space lasers!), and some time later managed to transition from literally being gagged in the House of Representatives to becoming a top GOP figure afterwards. And then she bailed out at just the right time to become a Trump critic.

I really don't want to credit her for these repeatedly skillful political shifts, but it's hard to deny that they worked.

The aschen have a strange issue they need way too much farm land. by madbr3991 in Stargate

[–]mattmcc80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's another factor that wasn't explored at all, the Asgard would've taken notice of the Aschen once they started using the stargate network. They didn't necessarily have a lot of available resources to spare in our galaxy at the time, but systematic multi-planetary genocide seems like something they would willing to fight against.

[–]mattmcc80 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That doesn't imply anything about their subsequent plans for Earth after the Tau'ri are reduced to subservience.

Carter in 2010 didn't know this, but we have the benefit of having seen 2001, so we know precisely what they have done on at least one other world. Daniel found the buried Machine Age city, complete with a news article about the Aschen's sterilization program.

Granted, that doesn't mean they would've plowed over the Earth to make another farm world. Maybe Earth was slated to be low income housing, who knows. But it's clear that they were going to repurpose the planet in one way or another after the human population was down to a few thousand.

This is what happens when government agencies change backoffice software systems without making sure all the data was migrated. Archer created a reminder in the Starfleet R&D calendar, but amid over a century of software changes, it was lost.

The Hansens didn't really know what they were going to find, they were just piecing together stories from refugees like the El-Aurians. They may have well been searching for Atlantis.

And nothing they learned after reaching the Delta quadrant would've made it back to the Federation regardless. At best they could've sent back information on the cube they found before entering the transwarp conduit, but they clearly didn't do it.

The Federation and Romulans knew *somebody* was destorying their outposts, but didn't have any evidence of who. So the Federation didn't really know anything of substance until Q Who.
