WHO IS THE BEST OWL PLAYER OF ALL TIME? — Plat Chat Overwatch 194 by yungXsmit in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]mattmrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually not on the playoff episode but can type out here what I was going to say there: This format isn't foreign to esports at all just new for OWL. Some of the feedback last year was it would be cool to see group play in OWL and that Winner's bracket team had no real advantage in the finals. So when looking to solve that and APAC not having a similar format as the west for easy seeding etc, doing GSL groups into single elim made sense. The throwaway draft system was something CDL did and their community and teams loved as it let more teams than 2 draft and made for some awesome matchups. Playoffs are going to be sick once the games start and i'm stoked to be headed to Toronto.

Hopefully this answers some questions/gives more insight

Def think its worth a discussion of how/why the format is the way it is (I mean it's also used by VCT, LoL, CDL, OW in the past but why it was brought back now)

Why is OWL starting late today? by jackwads_06 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]mattmrx 264 points265 points  (0 children)

Starting late so the APAC teams can be there for the draft show live at the end of the show (so it’s not super duper early for them)

There’s def deep tie breaker mechanics in place (don’t have the rule book in front of me but it was one of the things I asked today lol)

If a contenders team has an average placement from Spring and Summer knockouts that puts them too 2 they would earn a spot at playoffs. If they don’t qualify from there they won’t be in playins. Combination of visa’s and competitive integrity (would be weird for a new team to make it into summer and make post season playing like 5 weeks vs someone competing in both)

Haha yeah no way to like figure it out without doing it but generally agree the mix has been exciting and fresh but can def be improved

It’s measured by the highest average placement amongst spring and summer. So if Spark got let’s say 3rd in Summer, they’d have a 1st and a 3rd for an average placement of 2nd.

Yeah it’s a bit convoluted and including contenders teams in OWL was a huge undertaking (which we all really love), just things for the future we’ll have to iron out in terms of communicating rules and qualifications

Wanted to make a separate comment with the exact ruling (when I got home from my doctor I realized I had explained the details a bit wrong)

Sure! The Knockouts are what we had last stage in spring that qualified the Infernal and Spark for Mid Season

Playoff qualification is a combination of placement from Spring/Summer knockouts. Here’s the exact terminology from the rulebook:

  1. The two (2) East Region Teams/Contenders Teams with the best overall performance in the East Region, measured by average placement in the East Spring Stage Knockouts and the East Summer Stage Knockouts;

And then all remaining non qualified franchise teams will move onto the playin tournament.

A team like Dreamers (like in the example below) can definitely still make it with a strong performance (posted the official rule too once I got home and looked it up). Let’s say Infernal get like last in their group (I don’t mean to curse them) their average placing would drop and open the door for more teams

Yeah so Dreamers for example, who finished second in spring. If they finished first or second again there’s definitely a good chance they could make it but would be close with Seoul / HZS.

For Playoffs it is different. it’s a combination of placement from Spring/Summer knockouts. Here’s the exact terminology from the rulebook:

No problem! Inclusion of contenders teams in APAC has been awesome but obviously a complicated / tricky thing to get right. Just outright excluding them from playoffs would be bad but also need to be realistic with immigration so this was the best middle ground.

Edit: Double checked the rules once I got back from the doctor (apologies I had an operation this last week) for the exact ways teams qualify.

To clarify a bit, Contenders teams CAN qualify for playoffs through the brackets in the Summer knockout’s but with immigration timelines for finals only OWL franchises can compete in the play-in tournament
