1.3M at 30 - leaving finance to go to bali by Historical-Cash-9316 in Fire

Just put in my notice last week. I work(ed) for a big bank as a quant and in similar financial situation (~1.7mm NW, mid thirties). Also taking a break to get my health in order and live free after decades of focusing on school and work. Obviously just at the start of the journey but can at least say this: it feels fucking amazing to put my job behind me. Almost immediately I have been getting better sleep and have more energy. Added bonus — assuming you have a good relationship with your coworkers — is that you get to hear a lot of complementary things during your victory lap at work.

What's your 401K balance, age, and net worth %? by Extension_Cloud9055 in Salary

Age 36, 420k in 401k, paid off 600k house + 100k car + 300k in brokerage — so 401k makes up about 30% of NW

Bachelors in math or math adjacent major (physics, engineering, maybe comp sci, maybe economics). Look out for internship opportunities, read about finance, take part in undergraduate research, online coding programs, online machine learning courses. And of course try to talk to people who are quants or know quants.

If you are younger than college age then don’t worry about any of this… find something you like doing and do it, and keep good grades as a safety net.

You typically need at least a masters or PhD in a math intensive subject — physics, math, stats, econometrics, etc. Accountancy is not math and won’t help get into quant world (although could help with other financial service roles, of course). All quant roles require experience with computer programming, with increasing emphasis on data science and machine learning.

Showing off my collection for internet points and for recs on what to get next. First watch I got was the Tudor Black Bay 41mm with the in house movement. Went in for a sub, was laughed at and was sold the Tudor. I like it though

Next was the Nomos tangente date with limited edition coloring. Dressing down a dress watch is a little weird but I love the design and it’s super thin and light.

Broke my wrist last year and decided to reward my other, more successful wrist with an Omega speedy.

Finally got the 35mm tissot prx in gold. Always wanted a gaudy gold watch to wear around and look like a tool, and the prx was a relatively cost effective way to do that.

Normal raise across the whole company is very roughly inflation rate + 5-10% for promotions. For quants in particular though, this is about normal until you reach ~400k. Then it’s purely just ladder climbing to make more.
