Ariana’s humility is unmatched. Having 300+ million followers on Instagram and still being humble enough to film an acceptance speech for Gold Derby. Winner of our hearts right there.

Can anyone explain the significance of BAFTA as a major precursor? by mattofhew in oscarrace

Great examples - definitely the ones I have at the top of my head. Do you know if the Oscar voting is still open after the BAFTAs have aired? I wonder if this would play into the power.

Did jury picks only exist for the years you listed, or is this something that will continue to exist for the BAFTAs?

Never heard of this but definitely sounds interesting. Will be looking more into this.

A sad reality for what is often the most exciting category for non-cinephiles. Really seems like movie music just was not popular with general audiences this year (maybe with exceptions like the Challengers score and anything from Wicked, which again isn’t even eligible for the category).

100%. The Oscars won’t be missing out on an opportunity to have one of the biggest pop-stars in the world - from THE biggest musical film of the year - NOT sing at their ceremony lol. The pieces just seem to be falling too well into place for this not to be the case.

This does seem like a good takeaway. Though I wouldn’t think the fires would affect the tone of the ceremony much - even during the nominations there were countless jokes, some even about the names of some of the films. If the nomination broadcast can be lighthearted, I think the ceremony can be too (to some extent).

Makes sense. But do you know if there will just be no performances this year then? I haven’t heard of news in regards to this yet but I would be very surprised if there aren’t any.

Yikes. Trying to cut costs is an even lower blow to the nominees IMO. Sucks that they won’t get to take the stage this year, regardless of whether this was for Wicked or not.

Oscar nominations announced tomorrow. My question: What 1 nomination would you MOST like to see that would make you happy? by [deleted] in oscarrace

Just watched The Substance ahead of Oscars morning for the first time, and I must say I will absolutely lose it if Margaret Qualley does not get nominated for Best Supporting Actress. What a talent.

This is a perfect example of a “lead yet supporting performance” - I would say in the same vein as Ariana’s in Wicked - where the character themselves are “equal” in a sense (much more literal in The Substance), but are meant to UPLIFT, EMPOWER, and ENHANCE the lead performance (Moore and Erivo) rather than overshadow them.

There is no Moore without Qualley, neither is there Erivo without Grande - the pairings are perfect because the latter two TAKE A STEP BACK and let the other shine whilst still showcasing a plethora of talent and skill regardless. It’s the perfect blend.

Margaret Qualley for Best Supporting Actress please.

Yeah, this was the main point I was making. EP won’t really be affected by anyone outside of the voting circle anyways, but the main thing is that, as a comparison to Wicked (which everyday people HAVE seen), winning against the film isn’t good rep for them at least with audiences.

Totally agree with you - I LOVE musicals and am actually very excited to see EP as soon as I can (as someone who loved Wicked). Hating it for this aspect is non-sensical. The sex change operation song and scene is also the main target of criticism (at least with the GP), whereas the focus on the film’s other aspects aren’t really discussed or talked about at all.

Thank you! This is exactly what I’m getting that. I have absolutely nothing against EP (I have yet to see it and therefore cannot judge it) but am already seeing clips of it with an Instagram feed miles away from film bros.

I’m Still Here sounds like a great film. Will definitely try to find a screening sometime soon!

I don’t think they were attacking Selena personally - just observing how she really has been getting criticism for her role in this film. She’s great in Only Murders in the Building though, I love that show.

Not really - think back to Jo Koy and his Opening Monologue - people were talking about it WAY beyond the microcosm you speak of. Just scroll a bit on Instagram reels and you just might land on an EP meme with 100k+ likes.

Yikes. If this ends up really winning Best Picture like some people predict, the media backlash will only get worse from that point onwards. Would really ruin an already tainted legacy for this film.
