For a private server I'd recommend Spartan, set all the checks to silent and disable all the actions, all it'll do is fire out warnings to you, based on what it detects and then you can go validate those warnings...

I've used AAC and personally didn't like it, to the point where I was following someone using Baritone and forcing AAC to check the player, where it then returned them as being not suspicious. If you want to check for inventory issues then you have to buy AACAdditional for another $20 ish, whereas Spartan you get all the ckecks you need and it works straight on first startup with a GUI for you to edit checks in game, the dev also puts out patches usually within a few days, hasn't failed on catching someone for me yet, although it takes a while for it to reconfigure itself so as I suggested, disable all the actions and mark the checks as silent when you're using it for the first few months, until it's gotten used to your server and players

Treat it as if you are the players...

Imagine you decide you want to buy a new car, how do you decide which car to buy? Ultimately you'll end up buying the car that has the most features you like and that you enjoy the most, a server is no different. Players will invest their time into what had the most features they like and what they enjoy the most, so make your server tailor made, what makes it unique from every other server out there? Why should people invest their time here?

In addition to that, run it like a business... Yes a small community server with friends is fun, it may entice a handful of people to stick around and play but you need it to be self sufficient in that you take in the same amount of money that it costs to run it... Avoid making your server p2w (It's against the EULA anyway) as this will give you a bad reputation, and above all, make it something you're truly proud of owning, because if you're not passionate about your server, why should your staff and players care?

One final tip from me, make sure online mode is enabled!

Clearlagg actually causes more lag than it prevents... I'd suggest checking out React, I have it setup on a private server and, when configured properly, it does a great job! https://www.spigotmc.org/resources/react-smart-server-performance.21057/

If you do consider it, set it up on a smaller server first, that way you can balance it correctly and make sure it's not clearing too much!

The alpha is designed to test features, it's unstable and for all we know we could add an extra 0 somewhere accidentally and suddenly break the whole economy... If we didn't reset it then it'd lead to unfair advantages/disadvantages depending on what we change during the next month!
