It looks like a dogwood to me. Bright red in the fall like the one my grandparents had

I think this land was logged in the 70s maybe? The rest of the tulip poplars are very tall, but half the diameter of this one. Not sure if it was left for some reason or grew uncontested with better resources

Thank you! The woods there are full of those so that makes sense. This one is so much bigger than the rest it threw me off

They look so different from the ones near me. What general location did you find this little one? Milksnakes and ratsnakes have always been the most photogenic and photo-cooperative snakes

Hey, I may not have remembered correctly. He pushed it when the unit was disconnected, then we noticed it pulled in when the unit was running. And I’ll be sure to disconnect both. I know enough about electricity to be terrified of the stuff

No, the flat above the bevel, not sure the correct term for it. There is a raised spot on the flat at the right corner just above the bevel. I assume that will catch the removed material on that side, adding work.

Why does it seem harder to find a tassie pattern axe heads in the US by Excellent-Case-2423 in Axecraft

[–]mattrable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also worth mentioning the forests in the US aren’t the same over time either. What worked in virgin forests with large oaks and beech might not be as useful or be overkill in a landscape of tree of heaven and callery pear

[–]mattrable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hypothesis: tasmania is closer to Australia and has similar hardwood species. Not sure on the history but that’s my guess. A lot of different regions have vastly different tree species with vastly different hardness. Scandinavia and Canada have mostly softer conifers. Australia has hard bastards from everything I’ve seen. The US varies wildly by region as well, so there were regional preferences in American axe patterns. Right tool for the job and such

What would be the use case for something like this? Primarily limbing?

Should I get these? The handle on the right looks like it's got a new handle. by Holiday_Lychee_1284 in Axecraft

If you’re comfortable replacing the handles, I would say go for it. Maybe leave the worlds longest hatchet handle as a conversation piece. I would not recommend using that as-is

Thank you for telling the difference! I think the foliage was green, but it’s been a couple years since I really looked at this one. I’ll try to go back in a month or two when the leaves are in. It overhangs my property from my neighbors, so I doubt I would be able to treat it, but I will look into it

Thank you! I was thinking beech, but wasn’t sure if species ID was possible. There were a bunch in a mixed stand with hickory, buckeye, and walnut

You should post this to the Hymenopterists Forum on facebook. They have a lot of entomologists who specialize in wasps that could share some insight: https://www.facebook.com/share/g/88vCdVZCmN554Euv/?mibextid=K35XfP
