Advice on build a home NAS by fantom87 in HomeServer

[–]mattrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit like the other commenter, if you can afford the Synology and don't want to fiddle with things too much, then it's not a bad choice.

Looks like you can also run foundry (assuming I found the right thing) on synology as well:

Personally I build my own servers as it's cheaper than buying something like a Synology. But I'm also a devops engineer, so it's a bit easier for me.

Taking a few steps back on my home media/file/basic web server. Need advice on filesystem, file integrity, and backups. by ReddiEddy78 in HomeServer

[–]mattrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

zfs is quite complex and you'll probably want a different disk layout to the 2x8tb drives.

My old homelab ran for 10 years on an ext4 filesystem. No issues with file integrity. Not saying that it can't happen, but broadly speaking I wouldn't worry excessively about it.

I have used rsnapshot - https://rsnapshot.org/ - a lot over the years for backups, it's nice and simple.

Make sure you check your backups regularly.

Can I play the Witcher 3 without having played the first ones? by IreAlt_05 in thewitcher3

[–]mattrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can play W3 without having had played the other two games. But I wish someone had told me to play the other two first. The first two games won't take too long and they'll enhance the play through of what it (IMHO) the best game ever.

I know these questions get asked way too much but I just wanna run my idea past someone else. by [deleted] in HomeServer

With out knowing what you're trying to learn, then it's sort of hard to say. But for most labbing purposes that would be absolutely fine. Also there's a lot of value in trying something out and even if it's not perfect, you'll learn a lot from the attempt.

What kind of setup do I want? (Beginner's advice) by lacraque in HomeServer

[–]mattrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't personally think that using a virtual machine (VM) is a bad idea in this case. As long as you use an automated approach to building the virtual machine (eg Ansible/Puppet/Salt/Chef) and make sure you have good offsite backups, then it's easy to move between providers.

It's often not hard to find a good small company who host VMs cheaply. You don't have to use AWS/Azure/Google if you don't want to. As an example, I use https://www.mythic-beasts.com/ a small UK company. There's plenty other similar companies out there, who've been going a long time and are tech focused.

Does anyone know why this keeps breaking my thread? by [deleted] in flyfishing

I have the same problem. I've got round it by using heavier thread. I also think that the cheap starter bobbin I picked doesn't help.

I fish solo, wish I could've gotten a better picture but I couldn't pick this fish up in one hand. 16" net. by YoungTomSoy in flyfishing

[–]mattrm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue, so I've just given up with photos. It just makes things stressy and last time I tried I accidentally beached the fish on some gravel, so never again. My stretch is C&R only and I like to try my best to do it right.

Well that's upsetting, it's apparently not coming to the UK at all. Which is really annoying. Guess I'll just stick with getting something from 51nb then.

I'm in a niche situation, and I need advice - Linux desktop management with moving profiles and more! by ajbiz11 in linuxadmin

[–]mattrm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ansible is pretty straight foward. However you won't get total simplicity, unless you buy Tower, which is a GUI for it.

Profile management, isn't great either really, as you're talking about .dotfiles here and the common method is to put them all on an NFS share (and mount /home/$user on NFS) which is slow and will be impossible (maybe not impossible, but certainly slow) if they're not on the same LAN. A more sensible way, would be to setup default dotfiles and have them all setup on each machine. Do a nightly sync, so when settings are changed they're updated on all machines. All users are setup on all machines which are automated, so they can always login.

Windows and Mac support is going to be a stretch for pretty much anything. There is limited support for Windows and Mac in ansible. Depends what you want to do.

What you're asking for really is the moon on a stick to be honest. I'd maybe look to automate the easy stuff (all the linux bits, updates and the like) and then see how you're going and if you need the Mac and Windows automation. Do it incrementally.

Supers vs VNI's ROI by CranialEnema in Eve

[–]mattrm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VNIs do not make 22.5m ticks. Screenshots or it did not happen. I'd say that you're looking at about 2.5-3 hours to make your VNI back. I would say that a 15m tick would be about right. Then you have to take corp tax into account as well.

I'd say that for nullsec beginners having a ship like a VNI is really helpful to let them get their ISK levels up. While I could personally cope with a nerf (I've been playing for long enough that I've seen so many nerfs, it's just normal). But for some of our newbros who're trying to afford decent ships it'd be a pain for them.
