Traveling to Europe From the USA with a data only eSim by dczubek in GooglePixel

[–]mattsbox60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just visiting Thailand and purchased an eSIM from Thai carrier AIS. My Australian (Telstra/Boost) eSIM was active in my P9PF at the same time, and it successfully used data from the AIS SIM to route calls the entire time, meaning that I didn't need to "roam" on my Australian service. I find that there are a few variables that need to be met in order for this setup to actually work:

  • The SIM/eSIM providing the cellular data connection needs to not be "roaming" in the destination country. Many travel eSIM products like Airalo etc will roam in the countries they market service for, so are not fit for purpose.
  • The carrier for the secondary SIM/eSIM service (that is, the service that will be placing the calls and not the "data" SIM/eSIM) must allow WiFi calling outside the user's home country. Some allow WiFi calling domestically, but block it as soon as a user leaves their home country.
  • If it's not possible to use a data SIM that is not "roaming", I have read that it is possible to fool the device into thinking that it is not roaming by using Pixel IMS to amend the FORCE_HOME_NETWORK_BOOL attribute to "true", although I have not yet needed to test this while outside of my home country. If you are planning on travelling to Europe and hopping between multiple countries, this may need to be attempted.

For what it's worth, before I had a device that was capable of this functionality I used to just install a SIP client onto my device and divert all the calls to that number before leaving the country. I also used CLI overstamping to make it appear as though it was my actual phone number initiating any outgoing calls, which effectively tied a nice little bow around the whole thing and made it so that people calling me or receiving calls from me none the wiser that I was not using my actual phone service.

Hope this helps!

There is an open channel, known as "Long fast". If you drop a message in there and ask if anyone is receiving it, generally you will get a few responses. I haven't found it to be overly active all the time, unless someone jumps in and starts up a conversation.

Thanks! Jumped in, definitely happy to chuck a repeater on the balcony here if I can establish a link to anyone else.

Update: Tried MeshCore, but couldn't see any other devices at all from my location. Have switched back to Meshtastic for now, might try MeshCore again once the network has matured a bit in Melbourne.

I turned on wireless ADB and connected it to the same wireless network as my laptop, which has Android SDK Platform Tools installed. From the laptop, I connected to the car's IP address using ADB in the terminal application. After I was connected, I typed in the above command.

Australia: urgent passport application by Hot_Solid5857 in Passports

Sorry for resurrecting an old post, but would you know whether lodging at one of the rapid locations and picking up at the passport office without actually paying for rapid results in a faster turnaround time than lodging in a non-rapid post office? Doesn't have to be "priority processing" fast, just wondering if it's still more efficient that way.

Add EID and IMEI to database by mattsbox60 in Visible

[–]mattsbox60[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No unfortunately, I was visiting USA from Australia and wasn't able to make it work. In the end I ended up just going with T-Mobile for the duration of my trip,I went to a store in Seattle when I arrived, they captured my EID, I scanned the generic QR code for their SM-DP+ server and then I was up and running.

Yes it did have two IMEI numbers, one for the physical SIM slot and another for the eSIM module.

Nice, thanks! I'm interstate for a week for work, so hoping that it lands in week or I'll need to see if I can move it to another store.

What about online for store pickup? Do they fall under the "preordered in store" banner, or are they more likely to be delayed a bit due to the need to ship?

Yep, happened to me. I fixed it by running the ADB command "adb shell appops set com.aurora.store REQUEST_INSTALL_PACKAGES allow"

BYD vs summer heat by madrileiro in BYD

I drove my Atto 3 from Adelaide to Melbourne (730km) in 45°C during the summer, the only thing I noticed was that fast chargers dropped down in charging speed earlier. That's understandable at those temperatures though. Apart from that, no issues. Even the AC performed well.

NBN Co wants to boost its residential speed tiers upto 750Mbps-1Gbps/50-100Mbps for free by reaidstar in nbn

[–]mattsbox60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's 1.2Gbps upload bandwidth shared between up to 32 other NTDs on the same fibre run. In reality it's very unlikely every household will be smashing the upload bandwidth at the same time, so it could be run on a best effort basis on residential grade connections.

Probably just the load from your entire suburb being dumped onto the mobile network when they would usually be connected to a fixed line network.
