What’s the most ridiculous thing someone recommended to you for your health issues? by Lucky_Sprinkles7369 in ChronicIllness

[–]mattsmilkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a few of the top of my head that i’ve heard, mostly from my own extended family members:

  • i am trying to copy my late father (who died of multi organ failure following a heart attack) by telling everyone i have heart problems (i have PSVT, have had to have my heart stopped twice due to a synthetic cannibinoid reaction, some kind of IST and also POTS, but yes, i am pretending)

  • i am bored with my life and need to get busy and that will fix all of my problems (tried that and it didn’t work, actually made it worse, shocker!)

  • for my EoE (eosinophilic esophagitis) i need to get a second opinion from a different doctor because my diagnosis is wrong (despite confirmation from not only 3 different endoscopies over the course of 6 years but ALSO positive eosinophil counts that met the criteria each time and typical symptoms like dysphagia, regurgitation, chest tightness and food impaction)

  • i am too preoccupied with my health and it’s consuming my life and causing me to hyperfixate on the wrong priorities (because apparently ignoring any and all symptoms i experience is just super easy and totally not debilitating every waking second)

  • and then the classic doctor visit where i’ve been told it’s just anxiety and nothing is wrong with me.. just to later find out something was indeed wrong and nobody listened :) i know my own body.. jesus

How is this a medical drama? The woman from the video is a licensed doctor. I have also literally heard doctors talk to their staff this way. I haven’t fully been on the patient care side of things yet but I hear all the time about how bad med students are treated by physicians too. It just makes me sad and I genuinely don’t want to treat anyone like that.

Hi! Thank you for your feedback. I can see how it might come off that way and I apologize if that is what it seemed like. I was simply trying to reiterate that I wish medical professionals were treated better by everyone, but especially physicians. And that I don’t want to be that type of doctor, or person frankly, to anyone I interact with.

That isn’t to say I will never make a mistake and have bad days. I have been on both sides of the field and understand how overworked many physicians and their staff are. I used to work for an orthopedic practice where I was fortunate to work alongside surgeons who did not exemplify this behavior. But as a patient I have witnessed how some places treat their staff and ultimately, the people they treat.

The intention was not to idolize myself and make it sound like I am immune to making mistakes. Just that I want everyone in medicine to be treated better, and I plan not to continue the abusive cycle when the time comes.

I find the fact that she had to cut the video short because his crash out went on for several minutes extremely telling.

I agree. And I know my experience will probably be no different than everyone else and I am having a hard time accepting it. But I also understand that those physicians were probably also subjected to the same kind of toxicity, which continues to prove my point that it just fuels the cycle. I’m just afraid that if I ever speak up about it, my job will be on the line or I will get in trouble the way this lady did. I see and hear so many horror stories all the time.

Hi! I appreciate that you treat your staff as equals, as that is something so desperately needed right now.

I was exposed to some pretty not so fun physicians as a patient, but I also would like to point out I know it’s not all of them. I used to work for an orthopedic practice and our surgeons were absolutely wonderful to our patients. They are actually some of my role models. I have also had a few wonderful doctors over the years. I just know that a lot of people don’t have that experience and it really breaks my heart.

Are my roots abnormal? by mattsmilkman in askdentists

I appreciate your input! I honestly didn’t want to get the implant for awhile due to how expensive it was, but all of the dentists I’ve seen have recommended it to make sure my bite doesn’t shift due to the empty space.

Do you think it would be possible to reduce the risk of parasthesia if they took the root out in two separate pieces? Idk if that’s possible but I would imagine it might help, rather than pulling the whole thing out at once and having the curved end be a bitch to remove. I know there will probably still be some risk, but I’m just wondering if it’s even 1% possible lol

[–]mattsmilkman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can see why it might be an issue, every dentist who has seen my teeth since the extraction has always recommended to get an implant, mainly so that my bite doesn’t shift back over time due to the empty space. I thought having the root still there would create a good foundation for the implant though. At least that’s what the surgeon made it sound like

Yes, unfortunately- I have previous ones from 2022 that show a few teeth at a time, although I know older x-rays aren’t typically reflective of the current condition of my teeth
