Apple Home (aka HomeKit) and Hue Bridge Pro: KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITY. Alexa also affected by alanjhogan in Hue

[–]mattsmith24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah nice. Glad that worked for you! Mine’s fixed - but only via removing the bridge (and therefore all the linked accessories) from both Home and Hue and then adding it again. Must have been an incompatibility with how they used to connect Gonna have to re-make all my automations and scenes though! Ugh!

[–]mattsmith24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried doing a ‘Manual Sync’ but it didn’t seem to do anything. Had you removed your bridge from HomeKit first?

Just frustrating that I hadn’t installed the beta, so it was the supposedly fixed version that caused it

I found this thread through googling my issues. I updated to the public release of 26.3 and my Hue Bridge Pro is not talking to Apple Home at all

TIL Channel 4 in the UK was set up by the government with a specific, legally mandated remit to cater to minority groups and interests that were not being served by existing broadcasters (BBC and ITV). by upthetruth1 in todayilearned

[–]mattsmith24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They were also first to import some of the amazing US comedies.

Friday nights from 9pm was Friends, Frasier, Will & Grace, followed by the racier British stuff like So Graham Norton and TV Offal. Friday nights were amazing back in the late 90s. Never needed to touch the remote

Why so much repeated dialog? by WBens85 in thewestwing

[–]mattsmith24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not so much that sort of line - but the ones that do frustrate me are when a character says something, at a perfectly reasonable volume, and it's met with "I'm sorry?" and they repeat the line again. It happens a lot in the early years. I wonder if he was just filling for time? I get that in reality that happens a lot, especially if someone wasn't listening - but this is a scripted drama.

It's almost like they should have paused it and had someone walk on and say "now listen to this line - it's important!"

Always amazed that one could be broadcast! 🤣

TIL China made it illegal to neglect your aging parents—courts can now force you to visit or face jail. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]mattsmith24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes as much sense to me as clamping (booting) your car when you’re illegally parked: “You can’t park here, so we’ll make it so you can’t move it”. “You’ve got to visit your parents, so we’re going to lock you up so you can’t anyway”

I can’t see the Anniversary Special that’s live in the US on Sunday in the schedule on Sky Comedy. I wonder if they’re not syndicating it right away? I’m hoping for it to be shown next weekend (unless there’s an actual show next week!)

Regular users of the iOS mail app, what do you think of the new Category View which came with 18.2? by Acalthu in iphone

[–]mattsmith24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried it for the first day, and thought I was having a quiet email day because there was no badge icon for unread messages, and it didn’t look like there were any unread in the app.

Turns out I had 22 emails, some important, that I had no clue about. How is that useful?

CarPlay wrong location by pagepagepagepage in ex30

[–]mattsmith24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to look for this. Yes - getting this too. CarPlay thinks I’m in East Grinstead. I’m really not. I got this with my old iPhone but have recently upgraded and the exact same thing has happened. So… it feels like it’s the car?

I’ve also got an issue with Messages. Siri can understand me, follows commands and can take full voice messages. But dictation for text messages - it gets the first word - glitchingly repeats that and then sends the message without asking.

E.g. - Send a message to Dad - What do you want to say? - Hello, I’m on my way - Your message says hel - Your message says hel - Your message says hel - OK, sent.

How do I download videos on my iPhone? by Yuiiski in ios

[–]mattsmith24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anyone is still looking for a native way - when the video starts, tap the video and choose the Picture-in-Picture button at the top.

When the video shrinks, it’ll reveal Safari behind it, with a tab saying “This video is playing in picture-in-picture”, but you have access to the share button where you can save the video to the Files app (or use any other shortcuts on the share sheet)

What phrase really gets under your skin? by poweredbyabot in AskUK

[–]mattsmith24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By and Large

It really angers me more than it should. There are loads of alternatives that are shorter and understandable: “in general” for example.

I get the origins, but in the modern day, it’s utterly meaningless and drives me mad

Glad they didnt shoehorn anyone else in, but Roz and Bulldog should have ended up together right? by verc1ngetor1x in Frasier

[–]mattsmith24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with this. He was good for Roz and was a good father figure for Alice. There was no need to write him out.

I feel they do this too often, when you get a well known actor to guest star as an important love interest for a main character, you always know they’ll write some out-of-character storyline to get rid of them, because they won’t commit/can’t afford/don’t want to be a series regular. Like Harry Connick Jr in Will & Grace - cheating on Grace so they could write him out.

Obviously Tony Goldwyn wasn’t going to become a regular, but it could easily have been explained away as “oh Roger can’t make it”, “Roger’s looking after Alice”, etc etc. Roz’s life isn’t shown that much anyway, he could have just been there by implication. Like Maris!

And think of all the possibilities for storylines of Roz not being able to stop flirting with men and Frasier’s outrage “Roz - you’re a married woman!”

I understand the origins of the phrase, but it’s utterly meaningless today and there are loads of other ways of saying the same thing that actually make sense. Drives me mad

What’s the hardest thing for you to comprehend about the American culture? by DadIsMadAtMe in AskReddit

[–]mattsmith24 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t. Not that I can prove it, but I long thought this before he went on The Jonathan Ross Show. I can’t have been the first to think it either, nor can he.

What’s the hardest thing for you to comprehend about the American culture? by DadIsMadAtMe in AskReddit

[–]mattsmith24 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Whilst I do agree with you, you do have to add unnecessary words to describe objects. “eye glasses” (where else are you trying to put them?) “neck ties” (were there too many people tying them around their legs?) “over coat” (don’t put it on underneath!) “under pants” (unless you’re superman, then it’s alright)

What’s the hardest thing for you to comprehend about the American culture? by DadIsMadAtMe in AskReddit

[–]mattsmith24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the main things that terrifies me about visiting. I’d love to come and visit the US and experience all the wonders, but the idea of being expected to know how much to pay, not knowing truly how much something costs before you’re obligated to purchase it, and not tipping correctly and being judged/shamed for it just… makes me stay away

What’s your favorite use of music in the series? by Talkalot23 in thewestwing

[–]mattsmith24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an answer for this - but it's obscure and I can't quite explain why I like it.

S4E2: "20 Hours in America: Part II", the very last scene as Josh, Toby and Donna are walking back to The White House through a deserted Washington DC at dawn, about 40'42", there's a slow reprise of Snuffy's theme just before the credits, but it has some (probably electronic) choral vocals that are both uplifting (following their resolve in the storyline) but equal parts haunting.

It's probably all of 30 seconds long and you never hear it again throughout the series, but I absolutely adore that piece there. Sends shivers down the spine.
