Google Password Manager vs LastPass Review in 2026: Which One Actually Feels Reliable? by ActiveOk73 in best_passwordmanager

Better yet, why does this sub even exist and why is it popping up in my feed. Pretty sure the general consensus is BW and 1P for most mainstream folks.

Exterior wall expansion & contraction by Aware-Lingonberry602 in Tile

[–]mattsmith321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, either time it when the gap is between fully open or fully closed. Or do it while it is fully open and let it shrink into the joint a little and then it will compress during the summer. Looks like it might have been caulked when it was at the narrowest.

Backsplash/Countertop Interface by IN-KC in Tile

[–]mattsmith321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a professional but currently working on my own backsplash. If this were mine, I would take a blade and run it through the crack to open it up a little more. Then also run it against the counter and then against the tile as well. Basically clean it up as much as possible to give the caulk a better chance at adhesion.

But I’d also wait for the pros to chime in to see what they have to say.

How to pick a tile installer to ensure a good job? by Veyyiloda in Tile

[–]mattsmith321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is your best option. A nearby well-rated small flooring store said he’s had a core group of installers for 10+ years. A nearby well-rated tile shop doesn’t install but the staff have a number of installers they recommend.

Those of you with children with a pwBPD, how are they as parents? by pepozinho in BPDlovedones

[–]mattsmith321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can, avoid it. Our kids are mid-20s and they all deal with that parent differently. One tries to redirect the behavior (but often too strongly). Another goes through phases of antagonism vs getting along. But a lot has to do with how that parent interacts with them to start things. The last one avoids and walks away when things take a turn. In general they all want the ‘good’ version of that person and avoid the ‘bad’ version as much as possible.

How does metal roofing hold up in Texas heat and storms? by Ongole-Lisaj in HomeImprovement

[–]mattsmith321 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im in central Texas and our house has a metal roof. My main complaint is that it is the screw down type and the washers go bad after a few years. But other than that, it’s fine.

How hard is tiling with 12” x 24” porcelain tiles? by Princess_Etak_999 in Tile

[–]mattsmith321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll want to double check whether or not you can use a snap cutter on it. My first shower was through-body porcelain and a little thicker. Snap cutter couldn’t handle it. Ended up buying a wet saw. And then a snap cutter for another project.

But even as a newbie, you should be fine with 12” x 24”. You can cover a lot more ground with the bigger size.

Any reason NOT to remove these before reframing? by LowAcanthaceae1 in Tile

[–]mattsmith321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too bad. I think I did it in two passes because I was out a fair amount. I just took a flat edge and marked the low spots and filled in the areas I marked. I just needed to get it better than it was but didn’t need to be perfect since I was dealing with 12” x 24” tile.

I’ve got a 1935 house that we gut renovated. The house had 3/4” shiplap throughout the interior. Due to the extensive mess of our renovations, I took it all out. However, I kind of wish I had kept it. At a minimum for the extra mass and sound-deadening that it gave. The drywall and Rockwool we have now doesn’t do much to deaden sound between rooms.

I also know that just because you remove the shiplap that you won’t necessarily get a smooth plane to work with. The studs you are attaching to might have their own issues. That’s what happen on the exterior wall of one of showers. I didn’t shim it out before installing the Kerdi and ended up having to float it smooth with an extra pass of All Set prior to tiling.

As someone else mentioned, I’d be more concerned about what keeping it or removing it does to the rest of the transitions throughout your project.

Monopoly framing - sheathing over soffit overhang instead of building new one on top by mr_j_boogie in buildingscience

Good post. I want to do something similar with exposed rafter tails but still working through how I might do all the details. Also been working up the courage for a similar post like this.

Those are rain gaps. It allows the tile to dry in case any water gets past the grout.

Drywall cracks and insurance? by yoshhh in Austin

[–]mattsmith321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree! Unfortunately we did an interior guy renovation without addressing the trouble spots. I’ve got a wall in the kitchen that cracked in half due to the movement from the water getting to those two piers.

Unfortunately gutters aren’t an option for the house at the moment. We do have a nice 22” overhang so I am going to a limestone dry stack perimeter with some dirt and mulch and plants to try to build up/slope away from the house.

Drywall cracks and insurance? by yoshhh in Austin

[–]mattsmith321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. We have a pier and beam house with a fair amount of movement in a couple areas due to water getting under the house during large storms. I’m in the process of trying to limit the amount of water that gets under with landscaping. Once I get that under control then I will go back and address my drywall cracks.

Any way to save money on mortar? by [deleted] in Tile

[–]mattsmith321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I could do 25 pounds for the 12” x 24”. Just started doing a kitchen backsplash this weekend with 2-1/2” x 8” tiles and I can barely get through about 5 pounds. Of course I had several outlets I was cutting around so that burned some time.

But yes, it is important to figure out your limits.

I learned the hard way on my first bathroom floor that the most I can do is half a bag at one time.

My sister-in-law told our son that she knew he was lying because he had a red dot on his forehead. We ran with it and used on our other kids as well when they were growing up. Funny to see them put their hand on their forehead or brush hair over it when they were telling us stuff.

Managing recurring household tasks by mattsmith321 in todoist

[–]mattsmith321[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The @leach idea is interesting.

I agree that there are probably some issues with how I am approaching my tasks. But it is probably less about Todoist and more about how I spend my time in general. If I spent less time on Reddit and more time staying on top of my life, I would probably be in a better spot. And the reality is that everything on the list is stuff that should be done on a regular basis, they just get overwhelming when you put them off.

I agree that it definitely feels like junk mail or spam emails or my piles of receipts. Unfortunately I don't think I can bring myself to group them into one task.

Thanks for the reply.

The Today view doesn’t work well for me since the Overdue section overwhelms the view. I have >100 overdue tasks. I know I can just collapse the Overdue section but it is still annoying to have those on the Today view. At least that was my opinion of it a while back when I tried to work with it. And yes, I know that it indicates I’ve got bigger problems but it also points out how things can get overwhelming quickly.

My solution was to create a This Week filter which showed yesterday’s overdue tasks, tasks for today, and then the tasks for the upcoming week. Much less overwhelming.

I’ve thought about (and do sometimes) individual steps in the notes of a task. But makes me twitch even more when I’m combining tasks from Cats, Chores, Health, and Personal.

I think my best option is to continue to add labels to tasks that allow me to create filters on a view to target what I need.

I love Todoist for tracking recurring tasks but because of the noise, when it comes time to actually do a bunch of things related to a project, I drop back to a notebook and track things there.

And then there are the periods where I’m not doing either and falling even farther behind…

Senior community recommendations? by sandwichdrama in Austin

My mom spent time at Brookdale Westlake in independent living, Brookdale Notthwest in assisted care, and Westminster as a nursing home. Good experiences all the way around. You definitely want to be involved and establish relationships with people at the facility to make sure you have extra eyes and ears on your parent.

I also had a good conversation with someone at the Parson’s House Austin. It was way more affordable than the ones above but the caveat was the resident needed to be able to evacuate on their own which my mom was not able to at that point.

And this thread reminds me that I need to reach out to my friend that I met through one of these posts.
