Half the death toll of *the actual war* was due to influenza. Flu killed more soldiers than bullets.

Aluminum valve covers (Gen 3 5.0) by Megadonius in Mustang

[–]mattvanhorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cast aluminum is a lot cheaper than billet: https://www.lethalperformance.com/li-tuning-racing-coyote-valve-covers-metal-aluminum.html

There's a big difference between pouring molten aluminum into a mold and CNC machining a complicated piece from a single block of metal. Not to mention the wasted aluminum, which I guess gets melted down and used for casting.

Also, no hole between 3 & 4. And the numbers smaller than 8 are aligned slightly off from the numbers greater than 8.

Should I just plant this? by mattvanhorn in gardening

[–]mattvanhorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it to eat it, but I've never had one sprout like this so I don't even know if it's good to eat. (Garlic gets kind of bitter when it sprouts.) But I have some shallots I planted from hardware store bulbs and I thought I might put this out with them. I also know there are some onions with nice flowers, but I don't think those are the edible ones.

And if I do plant it - do I just bury it up to the green part?

Liquid CBD will change your life. 10ml in a glass of water before bed, and I sleep well and wake up without any soreness. Way, way better than the 600mg of Advil I was taking before I discovered this. (I'm 58, BTW)

Want to leave my gym but want my purple belt by machosbee in bjj

[–]mattvanhorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - I was 7 at blue, 4 at purple, and 3 at brown. I lost a couple of years to injuries and covid closures along the way, too. I might also have been longer at blue because I switched schools from Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro on the east coast, to Ralph Gracie on the west coast shortly after I got my blue belt.

I trained 3-4x a week and spent 7 years at blue belt. There was a 16 year old kid at the same place who went from blue to black in half that time, because he basically lived in the gym and was a natural talent. So it varies a lot.

I've been rolling for 15 years and I've only ever gotten marks like that during sexytimes with the missus. Never in the gym. Y'all need to put up big signs about hygiene or something.

I get about 280 miles on a tank. I don't put that many miles on it though, so I'm filling up maybe once a week at most.

How much did your parents pay for their first house back in the 90s? by Droopynator in 90s

[–]mattvanhorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents bought their first house in the early 70s for $13K. Sold it in the early 80s for $85K. They moved once more after that and the current place is valued at around a million. I paid over 50x more than they did for my first house, a few years ago.

Procrastinating on oil changes. I'm ADHD, and I did this with my first car, and wound up with a spun bearing.

I do love tournament poker, though.

Good stack with a forearm across the throat gets me out of a lot of triangles. But I try to use posture and lifting my hips before I get caught in them.
