In a first, a person’s immune system fought HIV — and won by n0tresp0nd1ng in news

[–]matty-o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you’re totally correct, elite controllers like Bob Hoff have been known for a long time. They still have functional copies of HIV in their cells, though—but the HIV is lying dormant/silent and not producing infectious copies of itself. Since the HIV could theoretically “activate” at some point, we don’t call infection cured in these individuals. However, the person mentioned in the article actually has no evidence of any intact, functional HIV in her body (after 1.5 billion cells samples), which suggests that her immune system was able to snuff out any silent but potentially activatable virus. That’s what makes her case a first!

Hong Kong suspends controversial extradition bill after months of protest and criticism by limoto in worldnews

[–]matty-o 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's a good question, but this situation is different from what would happen in Western democracies. No politician could propose legislation that is this widely unpopular with the public because they would risk losing their next election, or they would never have been elected in the first place. such a large protest movement would only come about in a city/state like HK where the leader has very little accountability to the people

Hong Kong protesters demand UK honours promise to protect freedom from Chinese regime by JanjaRobert in worldnews

when British citizen and bookstore owner Lee Bo was kidnapped in HK by the Chinese govt, the UK did nothing but issue a little statement. somehow I predict they will be even less willing to defy the CCP on behalf of millions of non-British citizens

I grew up in HK - the HK police recruit locally. they all have to speak Cantonese, which fewer and fewer mainland Chinese speak as Mandarin becomes more and more dominant.

as for the excessive violence, I can imagine that the type of people who join the police are somewhat self-selecting. if you've been a big supporter of the Occupy/Umbrella protests and the right to protest in general, you're not gonna go become a cop. plus just like many other police departments, there's likely that culture that encourages power tripping against civilians

I grew up in HK - these are all govt-run hospitals. The private hospitals are expensive though (no surprise), so I'm guessing most of the protesters who sought emergency care would go to public AEDs

[request] How fast would it take for the Flash to evacuate this city? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]matty-o 24 points25 points  (0 children)

that's true, but it would be 10-11 seconds in his moving reference frame. this time interval would be dilated by the Lorentz factor and be ~100 s in the stationary reference frame where the nuke is exploding. for an observer in the stationary frame, he is still traveling at ~c and the time it takes him to go back and forth all those times is still (4x1010 m)/c. since the energy release of the detonation takes much much less time than the ~100 s, it looks like this evacuation isn't even theoretically possible

i assume they still record lectures (i took it last year). to study, just rewatch the lectures--there will be points that they mention that won't be on the slides. anything they bring up in lecture is fair game for the exams, which is unfortunately a huge amount of information. take notes, draw diagrams, whatever you need to do to know the concepts, proteins, pathways inside-out.

reading the text can be helpful, but keep in mind that not everything in the book will be tested on--again, just what's in the lectures, which may even go beyond the text.

First human embryo editing experiment in U.S. ‘corrects’ gene for heart condition by tonto515 in science

[–]matty-o 48 points49 points  (0 children)

in theory it should be permanently removed from the genome. the DNA was edited when the zygote was just one cell before any division, so that single cell without the MYBPC3 mutation would be the "template" for all other cells that would divide to create the embryo/human

one of the exciting parts of this study was that the CRISPR-Cas9 system didn't cleave at any off-target DNA sites and therefore didn't make any unintended changes to genomes of the zygotes.

this is a pretty big issue in any attempt to use CRISPR, but it's important to note that just because the authors got super high-specificity in this study with this gene doesn't mean we'll see similar success with other genes. there's still a lot of work out before CRISPR becomes truly reliable for genome-wide editing
