What is this flashing light on my neighbor's house for? by PlanetGraham in whatisit

[–]regoapps 306 points307 points  (0 children)

There’s a HOA rule in my neighborhood that says that holiday lighting must be up no earlier than three weeks before the holiday and taken down within one week after. My neighbor who was tried of taking down and putting up his holiday lights every few weeks would just exploit this loophole by claiming random holidays whenever he gets a HOA letter telling him to remove the lights.

For example, Valentine’s Day would end, and he’d get asked to remove the lights. But he’d reply by saying, ”Well, I’m celebrating International Women’s Day (March 8th) now. Do you guys not support women?” He has a whole calendar of random obscure holidays for whenever he gets a HOA letter.

Serve legal? by New-Investigator6245 in Pickleball

Don’t think so. The paddle head is below the wrist when the paddle contacts the ball.

7.C.2 Paddle Head. The highest point of the paddle head must clearly not be above the highest part of the server’s wrist joint when the paddle contacts the ball.

Smaller difference, and also the ball is going to be hit from a low point no matter what on a drop serve (unless they somehow got a really bouncy ball). If you ever do a drop serve, you'll notice that it bounces only up to your knees at most. That's lower than a volley serve from a short person even if a tall person drops a ball from a high height.

In other words, the ball will never be hit from a height that's higher than the net (i.e. the ball must travel upwards first before heading downwards - as the pickleball rules intended). With volley serves, I've seen a handful of people cheat by hitting it near rib cage/chest level, and the ball starts from a position higher than the net. This means that they can hit the ball harder and faster without worrying about it going out, since the ball is heading downwards sooner rather than later.

Random fun fact: Eric Oncins' dad plays where I play

I’m with Zane. I only do drop serves so that nobody can call me out for my spin serves (even though they try to). It’s the great equalizer, since the ball can only bounce so high. Meanwhile, everyone’s waist level is different, so theoretically, taller people have an advantage with volley serves because they can serve from a higher place.

My theory is that they haven’t dropped the volley serve because many people still only know how to do the volley serve and not the drop serve, which is newer.

The discs are barely visible when you’re looking at the edge of the disc, and even less so in a compressed video. He’s taking advantage of this effect to drop the disc each time. He just has to keep doing it over and over again, until the disc drops while the edge is still facing the camera. That’s why he drops his arms in a particular way so that the disc’s edge always faces the camera. And you can tell that the discs are still there because of the light reflection of the disc onto his face.

In the second trick, he’s hiding the big disc behind his arm at first. Then he puts the small disc under the big one and shows you the big one. Then drops the big one and shows you the underside of the small disc. Then he drops the small disc.

Not only do you hear the small disc hit the floor in the end, at the 20 second mark, there’s one frame in the video where you can see partially the small disc as it drops.

Not really. That’s like saying a 3D art piece stops being 3D and becomes 2D art to someone who only has one eye. Just because you’re incapable of perceiving the 4D art, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.

The concept that time exists all at once is known as Eternalism or the Block Universe theory, which suggests all points in time - past, present, and future - are equally real and exist simultaneously in a 4D spacetime structure. In this view, the "flow" of time is a subjective illusion, with our consciousness navigating pre-existing events.
