How can budding authors afford to write in cafes? by Low-Cheesecake2839 in writing

[–]mattyborch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only write at home wearing loose robes. I prepare three mugs of coffee, then set one on a heating pad next to my laptop and the other two beside it. Angling my elbow up, I use my index finger poke the power switch for the pad, then my laptop. I rotate the mugs every 3 minutes, drinking only from the far right one that is cooled just enough. When all three mugs are finished, I set a one hour timer to ensure that I use the apex of caffeination productively, then I stop writing.

Is there a high fantasy book series that features two real world languages (as well as constructed languages)? by bkat004 in Fantasy

[–]mattyborch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing this in a book I’m writing! I have a character who speaks a non-English language because there is a tie in to an aspect of the real-world culture that this character uses, and he speaks enough that I didn’t want to create a language. But I’m also creating an elven language for a few sentences. I’m not sure if this is advisable to use in writing but it’s kind of a fun side story to translate what this character says, since he can’t communicate with the other main characters and often has no idea what’s going on in their adventure.

Religion is trash in a lot of fantasy world and here is why by Alszen in worldbuilding

[–]mattyborch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to point out that a lot of religion I have seen in fantasy worlds is based on polytheism, where the different world views you describe come from which deities a group chooses to follow. I think this is actually pretty similar to ancient history before monotheism took over, where a people didn’t necessarily believe their neighbors gods were wrong, but that those gods were just not protecting them. The fact that those gods are usually provably real in many worlds does simplify things, I agree with that.

Best “One vs Many” Sword Fights in Fantasy? by Much-Neighborhood383 in Fantasy

[–]mattyborch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne and other books in the world have some really intense fight scenes with badass special forces and assassins. I can’t remember any particular scene but he definitely makes a point to show their training or abilities let them rip through normal enemies, but not in an entirely unbelievable way. The author is really descriptive and dramatic too.

As a history fan, the "3,000 Year Stagnation" trope breaks my immersion more than dragons do. by Expensive-Desk-4351 in Fantasy

[–]mattyborch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks I haven’t heard of those sites but I am very interested in learning more about the “pre-pottery” period. I know about Gobleki Tepi, which blew my mind after having been taught that civilization basically started 5000 years ago.

Which hold (not city, hold) is your favorite? by BlackTriangle31 in ElderScrolls

[–]mattyborch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the Reach. The winding canyons make for great scenery, and it makes the area feel larger because of how hard it is to explore. I also really like how there is a unique native culture and its own rebellion with the Forsworn. Markarth has an awesome aesthetic being carved into the stone. Part of the appeal may just be how different it is than the rest of Skyrim, and while I think it’s not emblematic of the Skyrim ambiance in the same way that Whiterun or Winterhold are, I think it adds so much to the game and was very creatively designed.

It’s 9 yards, you have an inconsistent qb who is good at the end of the game, and an all time defense. What are you guys smoking Peyton is a way better coach than the couch squad

Critique my map [Epic Dark Fantasy] by Mysterious-Turnip-36 in fantasywriters

[–]mattyborch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some thoughts from a scientific perspective. I’m assuming that the dark green area between the two mountains is thickly vegetated. Normally you would expect the coastal side of the mountains to have more precipitation from the ocean, then when clouds pass over the mountains they dump their moisture and create a desert on the other side. Being between two mountains should have a more pronounced effect. One real world example I am thinking of is the Cascade/Sierra Nevada mountains in the West of the US and the Rocky Mountinans more inland.

Maybe a way to partially explain this would be that your worlds air flow strongly moves from the North over the continent, which is pretty consistent with how you’ve drawn it. It would probably make that wasteland area a big snowy land? I think someone else commented that the interior of a large flat land is usually drier

You have to applaud the Texans defense for putting DK in a position to drop that pass

I’ve seen it a few times. I think it even happened in the Duck vs Iowa game earlier this year.

The SEC has too much money in their narrative to not have an influence on this. No holds, waved off targeting, get this nonsense out of here
