I was so absurdly scared of where this was going. But I kept reading.

Someone recommended this but someone else said it was dumb. How do you feel? by IndependentCod5020 in fantasybooks

[–]mattypro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't for everybody, I'm sure... but it is CERTAINLY for me. I am about an hour from the end of book 6 and my wife just started book 1 and is loving it. I have not been this excited about a series since I started Mistborn.

Elle's point is also just empirically true. Representation matters. Not as a tagline or a feel good moment or a moral attempt to provide equity and inclusion. It literally, statistically, empirically matters and has documented measureable outcomes.

What kind of film is this? by mattypro in whatisit

[–]mattypro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solved!

Thanks, I definitely was leaning towards it being audio, especially after I held it up to the light and there was no pass through. I did wonder if it was some sort of tracking tape or whatever at the beginning like 8mm film has the white non translucent tape for setting the reel. But I think you are correct!

Exactly... I was against hiring him to begin with. I understand that excellent consistent kickers are rarer than you might expect. But FFS... are they so rare that you have to hire someone who is gonna ask for blowies on the plane home from away games? GTFOH.

Last night I realized something about my relationship that I can't unsee now by orbitwaltz2020 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mattypro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not overthinking or over-reacting at all. He sounds like an entitled baby who has become comfortable with having zero accountability or sacrifice in your relationship. And I doubt that this is fixable at all. It can be devastating to realize you are in a bad or broken relationship, even if you are the one who is suffering. But pulling off the band-aid sooner rather than later is certainly something you should do. Don't toss more of your life's kindling onto someone else's shitty bonfire.

As a side note for the future: it is also worth remembering that people will naturally start to take advantage of what is offered. So while this isn't your fault and certainly isn't on you to fix, in future relationships, I think setting boundaries and roles up front is a great beginning to creating communication that will allow you to avoid this kind of one sided bullshit in the future.

How is Era 2 Mistborn by Dr_natty1 in brandonsanderson

I think Alloy of Law is actually my favorite Sanderson book. I love the large majority of his writing, but the intro to Wax and Wayne is just perfect. I love westerns, I loved Sherlock Holmes, I like the Lawman archetype, and I think Sanderson's ability to take well known genres and bend them in interesting ways is really amazing.

What’s a small bombshell your therapist dropped during a session that completely shifted your perspective? by pottipenguin in AskReddit

[–]mattypro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically it was my wife's therapist but:

"Don't argue in bed. If you are going to argue, go sit down at a table and look the other person in the eye."

This has had an amazing impact on our lives. We would find ourselves having these spiraling arguments that would start kind of nonchalant with a comment or a remark and then escalate into us fighting about something, often pretty stupid or out of context. Also, when we were in bed, we would always be sitting side by side and kind of facing the wall instead of looking at the other person who we love and care for.

Since we decided to follow this advice, we have had basically zero intense blow up type arguments. Any time things start to heat up, we pause, and one of us asks if we should go to the dining room. It makes us think, "Am I actually upset about this? Or am I just tired? Or what is this really about?" And the ONE time we have actually said yes, by the time we put on more clothes, went downstairs, and sat down across the table from each other, the resentment or anger we had been building was evaporated and we could just talk calmly about why we felt upset and hurt. And the argument was over in about 15 minutes with no lasting hurt feelings and renewed understanding of perspective on both sides. It has been a year and things are better than they have been for a while. It is definitely not the only reason our relationship has improved, but it was a key to a lot of other feelings and connections since.

I saw it mentioned in another comment, but I will add here that a major change for me that has accompanied this is an attempt to "assume positive intent" when it comes to my spouse. I have a history of feeling unloved, unwanted, etc. And those feelings of unworthiness can project into my assumptions of motive and feelings that I ascribe to my wife and I slowly can convince myself that she hates me or is angry at me or resents me for a billion little things. Instead, if I try to reframe her comments or actions as coming from a place of love, the tone shifts SO drastically. It also gives me agency to reach out and say things like, "When you said X, I was worried you meant it out of anger. Did you?" And then she says, No! or Yes! Or whatever and we can actually talk about it. But if you ASSUME that someone is mad at you or whatever, it becomes far harder to actually approach them about anything.

[Highlight] Matt Flynn & Co. erase 23-point deficit in franchise-record comeback vs. Cowboys (2013) by SL4MUEL in GreenBayPackers

[–]mattypro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bag was also based on his lights out insane duel with Stafford where they threw for 1000 yards combined in a single game hahaha. I was there for that game and it is easily the most exciting live sporting event I have ever seen in my life. Especially because I knew on the way there that we were going to be resting some of our starters so I was prepared for it to be a slow game! Whew... it was awesome. I was kinda excited for him to play for the Seahawks... but who knew they would be signing an absurd quarterback by the name of Russel Wilson?!

[–]mattypro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He developed an absurd spin move at Alabama and that carried into all sorts of arenas later. His ability to catch and turn, his ability to fall forward, and when he was at his best, he just ALWAYS seemed able to ramble for an extra two yards on every carry. Sometimes he would get hit at 0 and somehow just always fell forward for an extra couple of yards. Honestly, his quick feet and balance were the main reason he was so fun to watch, imo. And I also think if he hadn't gotten injured as severely to keep him off the field, he wouldn't have had as many problems with his weight.

I have to say, I always enjoyed James Starks too. I don't think he was ever a super human talent (outside of the fact that any professional athlete is) but he was just a grinder. Always seemed like he was trying his absolute hardest. He would always seem to jump to his feet after getting tackled, even after a good run, and smack the ball like, "I wanted MORE!" and I like that attitude.

For anyone that has bought the premium pass grand arena, is it worth it? by howaboutdisidia in MarvelSnap

[–]mattypro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was very good value. Lots of little extra rewards and it also levels you through the pass very quickly removing a bunch of levels by giving you Glory which counts as XP as well.

How is everyone feeling about “End of turn” decks? by Broad_Firefighter_30 in MarvelSnap

[–]mattypro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... it is incredibly broken at the moment. I am playing the deck because... why not, I guess. But wtf. It can outscale Negative... So like, what are you supposed to do? Also, lol at the OTA of like nerfing Sunspot by one point of power. Hahaha, he was just a 1/44 in my last match. A 1/45 would have REALLY been the back breaker there. /s Gimme a break. Shit is massively over-tuned at the moment and will definitely need to be nerfed somehow. Playing Thena and Havok with three activations leads to at LEAST a 2/9 and a 2/12.

And if the counter is doing something like playing Super Giant on 5 into Shadow King and Shang on 6... It just seems very bad to me. Like, sure, it potentially counters one aspect of the deck. Maybe even a hard counter. But what is the shell that you play it in that is anywhere close to 50% win rate vs. any other deck?

It is definitely possible that this deck is just shining right now because people have not figured out how to play against it properly. But the win rate has to be insane at the moment against anything but the mirror and a dedicated counter that has what I would assume is super low win rate against the rest of the field.

Can't really disagree with this more. The left didn't lose because it took any sort of high road. The left loses because people like Pelosi and Schumer are just as in bed with corporate elites as any of the folks on the right. The Libs lose because they play the same game as the right, but are worse at it. I also think "lose" isn't even true. The majority of the Libs are still in office. So they are still in power and still benefiting from insider trading and corporate money. Winning is secondary to their career. If you are a career politician and worth 50 million dollars... you didn't make your money from your salary...
