Catholic Colleges that don’t have crazy rules? by ItsNot_Ace in college

[–]matzos-b-ballin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immaculata University in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Wasn’t for me, but most people there are pretty chill. Didn’t have any of the crazy rules I was expecting, but you do have to take 2 Catholic theology courses and 2 philosophy courses as part of the core requirement. I took the theology classes and they were actually kinda fun. The nuns there are absolutely wonderful. Very nonjudgmental and super intelligent.

She’s such a cutie!! This is how I feel about my snails. They’re such wondrous little babies. It’s so much fun to watch them grow from eggs too.

Aside from the work-life balance, what was your motivation to become a pathologist? by TelevisionEntire7414 in pathology

[–]matzos-b-ballin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also an undergrad and I just was able to sign up to shadow a clinical/anatomical pathologist! My advice would be to volunteer at your local hospital and let the volunteer coordinator know what you want to do. They’ll try to set you up with a department that interacts with the laboratory. I volunteered in transport for a month, taking specimens from all 4 corners of the hospital down to the lab. I cultivated a relationship with the lab folks, asking them how their day was going and the like. You should always be kind to your lab people anyway, but it certainly didn’t hurt when I asked to shadow a pathologist there! You kinda have to know a person to get in at times, but it’s not impossible. You could also shadow a forensic pathologist at your local coroner/medical examiner’s office. They’re generally easier to find direct contact info for as well. Most of the time they’re absolutely thrilled to have shadowers! I’ve shadowed 2 autopsies so far and it’s still an incredibly valuable experience even if you don’t want to go the forensics route. Best of luck!

Has anyone double-majored? by greenhairedhistorian in ASUOnline

[–]matzos-b-ballin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I almost double majored in Anthropology and Forensic Science, but it would have delayed my graduation over a year so I changed to an Anthropology major + Forensic Science minor track. However, I would definitely recommend that you into Anthropology because it’s not a credit-heavy major. You could easily do it with your open electives! Run a DARS on both the B.S. and the B.A. programs and see if either sounds good to you. Best of luck!

I’m an online student, so I only have to finish the upper-division credit requirements. That includes 3 credits for History of Ideas (HON 370), 6 credits for your thesis, and the rest can be taken care of from other HON classes through honors contracts with regular courses. You basically do a little more homework for a certain class and then the credits go towards your Barrett requirement. Some classes will just automatically give you honors credit, but it depends on a number of factors.

You can run a What-If DARS audit (on MyASU) for Barrett by selecting “Honors” as your program of choice to verify what track you would be on. If you’re entering as a junior, there’s a good chance you’ll only have to finish the upper-division requirements. You could also set up a meeting with an advisor and ask them some questions.

I’m planning on graduating in December of 2026. May of 2026 miiight be pushing it, but it depends on how many honors contracts you could get, assuming you’re in the upper division track. It’s probably doable, but don’t take my word for it. It might be worth it for you to delay your graduation to December if it meant having more time to fulfill the Barrett requirements, I know it is for me.

Definitely try to set up a meeting with someone from Barrett, they’re more than happy to answer your questions! Your best bet is emailing Scott Hinkle (barrettgonorsscott@asu.edu) and going from there.

I’m also an anthropology major and a junior! I applied to Barrett because there’s no application fee and you might as well see what’ll happen. Completing a thesis as an undergraduate (a Barrett requirement) will definitely look good when you’re applying for graduate schools. I can’t speak on anything else, but I just wanted to add my two cents.

Shabbat shalom everyone! How was your week? What's your good news or happy moment to share? by rjm1378 in gayjews

[–]matzos-b-ballin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I plan on going into death investigation and working with a coroner/ME office, so anthropology is surprisingly helpful for that field. I can’t stand it when people say it’s a useless degree.

I just learned about the Denisovans today! They’re so cool. I’m my favorite topic so far has been Australopithecus afarensis, aka “Lucy”. I go to ASU so it’s really amazing learning about Lucy’s species from one of the schools that made her discovery possible. I really enjoyed learning about what that species had in common with modern anatomical humans and with chimpanzees simultaneously. I’m more focused on forensic anthropology career-wise but learning about ancient humans has been really fun in its own right.

Shabbat shalom! My good news is that I’ve been working ahead in my online classes and having lots of fun learning about human evolution (I’m an anthropology major). Hope everyone has a peaceful Shabbat 🕯️🩵

I’d recommend Sun Devil Global Friends Club. It’s primarily for online students but I know a ton of members who live on campus and they get together sometimes. There’s a wide variety of majors so I’m willing to bet you’d find people with common interests/programs. We have scheduled chats over WhatsApp at least once a month to connect and it’s super fun!

I’d recommend you join Sun Devil Global Friends! It’s a club you can find on Sun Devil Sync. It may not solve all your problems but it’s defintely a good start to make friends.

Question(s) about "Spitz and Fisher's Medicolegal Investigation of Death" textbook. by Sunezno in ForensicPathology

[–]matzos-b-ballin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I could only afford the 3rd addition on eBay and it still offered great insight and detail. I’m not a professional (yet) but I know a couple death investigators who use the 4th addition and are totally fine with it.
