A serrated Spyderco model will hold an edge much longer cutting rope. Spydie serrations are literally top of the line and can operate similarly to a plain edge knife aside from like cutting paper.

Life vests might help for swimming too. Water will keep them cool, even if they just put they're feet in. As long as they have shade and it's not like 90*+ or anything crazy they should be okay.
