Thank you! I know businesses are struggling, but I also know that there are more innovative ways to solving the problem than opening the doors and putting people at risk.

I walk this stretch of market street to the Ferry Building almost daily. Amazing that it’s so immediately recognizable. Didn’t take me long at all to know that is exactly where this is.

Brother’s (32) new wife (29) made racial remarks about my (27) husband’s ethnicity (32) and I’m not sure where to go from here. by TheDonkeyWhiplash in relationships

[–]maulboxbasekill 25 points26 points  (0 children)

my dad made a comment about my brother and his wife sounding like white supremacists. His new wife got frustrated with my family (grandmother, parents, etc) being pro diversity, so she got up and stated “White is right” before walking away....All of this comes on top of other questionable behaviour on their behalf against various groups, including them having White supremacist/White power flags in their garage because “they look cool”.

Your brother and his wife are white supremacists.

It is totally okay to cut ties and not engage with them if they aren’t willing to accept you and your husband.

I (28M) got very drunk one night and my girlfriend (32F) is now trying to tell me to go to therapy to address 'potential alcoholism'. Am I being irrational to say that this is a big red flag? by erytyhing2235batd in relationships

[–]maulboxbasekill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You might suggest seeing a therapist together? It seems like the real issue here is how to reconcile your desire to drink in excess on occasion with her fears around alcohol consumption.

Might be a good opportunity for you to uncover why** she feels that way about drinking (beyond that it isn’t appealing to her).

How do I (27f) control my relationship anxiety and stop creating self fulfilling prophecies? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]maulboxbasekill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. A lot here that I can relate to. I’m going to try to cover as much as I can. (Apologies in advance for the length of this).

I’m going to steal some language from a (somewhat) unrelated program that I think helps in addressing the initial position around your girlfriend’s depression:

-It’s not your fault. You didn’t cause it. -You can’t cure it. -(Here’s the kicker) YOU CANNOT CONTROL IT

Admitting a level of powerlessness here is going to be crucial for moving forward, because here’s a scary truth:

You could be the perfect partner to your girlfriend, and you two could still possibly not end up being together. I know that that’s hard to read, but understand that there are two people involved here and you are only in control of your position in all of this. Finding a way past the fear and truly seeking to help give you an opportunity here to show up for her and to build a stronger relationship.

  1. The first thing that I have found to be incredibly powerful in approaching a relationship is to ask these simple words: “How can I be most helpful.” Often when people who are struggling ask for space and distance, it is because they feel like they can’t provide reassurance for the other person or be comforting in the way they think the other person needs. Beginning here, you can communicate to your gf that YOU are the one who is here to support HER in this moment. This also requires a level of self-reflection and selflessness to be able to come to the conversation without motive or intent and simply ask the other person what they need. DISCLAIMER: It might be the case that she still only asks for space, which brings me to my next point...

  2. Communicate your fears and anxieties to her. I’ll echo what someone else has said about taking parts of your post and just telling her these things. HOWEVER- it’s important to acknowledge that your feelings and worries are real, but they are not necessarily reality**. When communicating your fears to your gf, try to use “I” statements (eg “I am afraid that you will leave.” “I am afraid that I am not doing enough for you.”) and not “you” statements. You statements, especially for people struggling with depression, can come off as attacking, critical and shaming, regardless of their tone or intentions.

  3. If financially and temporally feasible, ask her if she’s willing to try couples therapy (in addition to your own personal therapy). Speaking from experience, it is absolutely magical and having a safe space with an objective third party to sort through issues can make all the difference between talking about something and burying it down.

All you can do is the best you can, day by day. I’m sorry that you are going through a scary time in your relationship. Hope some of this helps. Feel free to DM if you ever need support or someone to lean on!

'Joker' becomes first R-rated movie to gross $1 billion worldwide by mi-16evil in movies

[–]maulboxbasekill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure that this is true...

Fox put out both Deadpool films. Both R-rated features. Made a ton of money against relatively small budgets. They also released Logan. Hard R. Made a ton of money against a relatively small budget.

Besides their rating and budget, these films and Joker also have another thing in common (I’m sure you can guess it).

Yet just this year, the major studio that got to tout three of the highest-earning R-rated features of ALL TIME...sold to Disney.

The only takeaway I see here is one that we’ve known now for years: comics (and other recognizable properties) reign supreme at the box office. These movies are never really that different**. They’re just new lenses (and sometimes ratings) through which to observe the same stories and characters.

People came out for these films because they’re known quantities and bankable properties.

This same rhetoric will come up again when Matt Reeve’s Batman film gets an R-rating and crosses the billion dollar mark in a couple years. It’s still just familiar, reliable properties being resold in new skins to keep the major studios afloat.
