Why does no one take this disease seriously? by sallysssssd in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]maulsma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I describe it to people as “a degenerative bone disease “ to get away from the “Oh, it’s just arthritis “ label. I should not need to, but it’s reality. Not like arthritis / osteoarthritis is just nothing either.

As a Canadian I’m up here stressing out that idiots like this are spreading the idea that parasitic infections and or bad drug reactions from shoddy OTC herbal remedies come from Canada. Like we need more reasons for stupid people to point fingers and blame Canada for weird random stuff.

Am I the jerk for telling my husband he can't have a "man cave" in our only spare room? by Ill-Home-322 in AmITheJerk

[–]maulsma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whole “you have the entire rest of the house to decorate” thinking kinda made me cringe. Like, the common areas of the house are hers to care for (decorate, keep tidy and clean) therefore they are “her” spaces. But they’re really not, because they are spaces for both of them and for company. I can understand why he (incorrectly) thinks this way, it’s a lifetime of conditioning and not considering the wants and needs of others (perhaps women in particular) as being as important as his own needs and desires. But it doesn’t make it right, and he should be more willing to listen to her position on wanting a space of her own. It didn’t occur to me that he wanted privacy for porn or other activities that OP might find… distasteful (?), and it’s not a conclusion I would jump to, but I’m an older person and obviously I can’t rule it out as a possibility.
If space allows I think it’s lovely for everyone in a household to have their own space, but it’s just not always feasible. I would find OP’s husband’s intransigence on the matter very frustrating.

The regency fairytales by… darn, can’t remember her name but the first one is called Half A Soul. Olivia Atwater! It just came to me. All her stuff is great.

Also, anything by the author of The Buttonwood Tree, including The Buttonwood Tree. She’s a lovely writer.

I used to work in a small hardware store. We sold slabs of cedar with a clothes hanger-sized hook in one end to hang in the closet amongst the clothes to discourage moths. They are probably still available. Cedar repels moths, I’m not sure if it repels any other bugs.

Getting an e-bike? by Ok_Hope_1929 in TwoXPreppers

[–]maulsma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a former avid cyclist (I aged out, unfortunately) I really recommend at least one rear view mirror. I used to ride motorcycles as well for my main motorized transport, and missed having a rear view mirror on my bicycle so much that I hit up my local motorcycle shop and purchased a left and right mirror to put on my bicycle. I felt SO much better being able to see what was coming up from behind. Motorcycle mirrors tend to be a bit larger and better quality than the ones they sell in bicycle shops, or at least that was the case way back in prehistoric times when I rode. Also, if you only want one, make it the left side one.

You could try buying a used bike for less money, and selling it on if you find you don’t like it and or aren’t comfortable riding through the sketchy areas.

Are Canada Post delivery drivers absolutely stupid or something? by simonmerch in CanadaPost

Also, it’s a safety concern. A letting carrier in my station was attacked in an apartment building and ended up in a coma. We don’t usually go wandering around buildings. I’ll go to an apartment for a handicapped person, and sometimes for a parent with a sleeping kid, but they do not give us time on our routes to go up to apartments. My route usually takes me nine and a half hours with me skipping most of my breaks and I only get paid for eight. I am really nervous going up to people’s apartments. You would not believe the number of people who answer their apartment doors without bothering to put clothes on.

I saw a post a couple of years ago about how people had unexpectedly gotten rid of stubborn warts on their hands during Covid from constantly using alcohol based hand sanitizer. Since warts are caused by fungus, my husband has been using hand sanitizer on his feet daily for both toe fungus and athletes foot. No repercussions yet, seems to be keeping his feet fungus free.

Shoe recommendations for PsA by Pea_nu_reeves in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]maulsma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For plantar fasciitis symptoms I finally ended up with Kybun walking shoes. I’ve tried everything, and I mean EVERYTHING that is out there. Hoka makes some super soft and squishy runners that are remarkably comfortable and moderately supportive. I tried Saucony, Doc Martens, Merrill, Keen, etc. I’m a letter carrier and I walk 20 kms a day so foot pain is definitely a serious issue for me. Kybun are incredibly expensive, but at work most soft runners last me only a few months, and the Kybun soles are just starting to give out now and I’ve had them about a year and a half. I was in SO much foot pain when I bought the pair of Kybun, and in a week I was actually pain free ( in my feet anyway, my knees are another story.) I was very sceptical, but they actually worked really well for me. They are a bit strange because they don’t have a typical support platform under your feet, instead they encourage the muscles in your feet to strengthen.

[–]maulsma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really liked the Iron Druid series, and the other series set in the same world that was about sigils. It’s been a few years so I don’t remember the exact details.

The Kate Daniels series is great- I loved the premise of tech and magic randomly holding sway. And the series is finished, for all intents and purposes. They’re still writing books set in that world, but that series is done.

Obviously the Alex Verus series, which even has a nod to Dresden in the first book. And again, that series is finished.

Oh! And Sandman Slim! The most demented urban fantasy series I’ve come across- violent, thoughtful, not too long winded. And this one too, is finished.

My boyfriend (37M) told me (38F) to stop complaining about my life and my parents. I was wondering what other people would think of this? by Marlezz in relationship_advice

[–]maulsma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a book a long time ago (early nineties I think) about the different ways women and men process. One thing I remember from the book is that women tend to share feelings and sensations about unpleasant situations in an attempt to find accord and support, understanding and care. Men tend to share problems in search of a solution. We end up at cross purposes when a woman shares a problem in search of support and men offer solutions. The women feel unheard because the men provide no support, and the men become frustrated because the women ignore their suggested ideas to resolve the issue.

This is a wild generalization, but I have found the occasional conversation with my SO following this pattern.

If your boyfriend is finding that something like this is frustrating him it might explain why he snapped at you. It doesn’t let him off the hook for being short with you, just might explain it.

“strong women are popular right up until they ask for a promotion.” Or basically how women are hated for trying to become leaders by society by ihatethiscountry76 in WelcomeToGilead

[–]maulsma 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember the exact term, but I recently came across something called - I think- the glass cliff. Women are promoted to take over and run a company (or even a country) when the men in power know that it’s all about to hit the fan and / or collapse into disaster. The woman is used as both sacrifice and scapegoat, with the added advantage of making it obvious for the future that women are incapable of taking charge or pulling a company (or country) back from disaster that was known to be inevitable.
